Talking Got my FIRST Teamster pension check today

It has been a 9 month wait and today when I got home, I got an envelope from the Teamsters pension...... WOW! I put 30 years in at UPS and was forced to retire last year because my back got so bad. MANY TIMES... I just wanted to WALK from that job...and I mean MANY!!!!
I am only 54yrs old and looking forward to a LONG and HAPPY retirement.
I know that UNIONS have mixed opinions about them by people but I want to thank the TEAMSTERS union for making my pension possible.

Alot of the people in this site are young and retirement is probably not on top of the list of priorities BUT.... It is there before you think.
Anyhow.... a 9 month back paycheck from my pension is a welcome site!
Just have to keep it from burning a HOLE in my pocket!

Congratulations on making it 30 years at UPS!

That is one heck of an accomplishment.

My administrator's husband has been working at UPS for 20+ years, and his body is pretty much broken down.

Nice, Motorhead. Hope you have a good retirement.

It seems either you can use your back too much and have back problems later on, or not use your back enough and have back problems later on. My gramps started farming his 200 acres full time after retiring from being a doctor... how would you like that for retiring. Of course he finally retired from that and now is just resting... poor guy's back is shot and walks around all bent over. At least he ditched his old Honda Accords and finally bought a nice used Lexus.

Unfortunately, those types of jobs are disappearing quickly.

My dad was a retired teamster and loved every first of the month.

Is it true that UPS is trying to do away with the pensions to new hires in exchange for a higher salary?

My friend works for them here and had mentioned something to me along those lines awhile back.

Enjoy yourself.

I have not heard of them trying to do away with any pension benifits. In 1984, they adopted a two tier pay level. All employees, like me, that were hired prior to '84 kept their pay senoirity. All new, post 1984 employees were hired in at a lower rate and would never catch up to employees like me....even if they were doing the same job. I worked with guys with ten years senoirty and I was making $13.00 per hour more than them. The ONLY exception was drivers. I mainly worked in the building. The insiders and part-timers usually got the shaft at contract time to appease the drivers. I HEAR that this contract coming up that the Teamsters want to do away with this two tiered pay structure.
I plan to do ALOT of things I WANT to do. My wife has gotten her BA, (went back to colledge full time at 52!) and she plans to teach grade school for 5 to 8 years. We will be able to travel for 2 months every summer and when she gets weeks off during the hollidays. I am traveling some on my own. I went powered para-sailing for the first time about a month ago at the Salton Sea. It was a real trip. I wasn't flying the para-sailer but I was sitting up front ....IN FRONT OF GOD AND EVERYBODY! All that was in front of me was the front wheel of the trike air frame.
I am also onto old motorcycles and my 18 year old daughter and I are rebuilding a 1970 Honda Trail 90 for her to ride. I have a 1967 Triumph, 200cc, Tiger Cub. I have my restored '55 bug and a 1939 WILLYS pick up to work on.
I still can't fathom that I don't have to go back to UPS.
Instead of getting up for work at 3:00am and going to bed at 7:00pm, I now get up at about 8:30-9:00am and go to bed at about midnight.
