Kidney Stones Suck!

This past Sunday I wasn`t feeling well and hung out in bed till noon. Got up and my side was hurting a little. After about an hour, I was on the floor in pain. Spousal Unit hauled me to the emergency room and after some tests, I was told I have kidney stones. They sent me home with some really good pain medication and told me to drink lots of clear liquids and hopefully they would pass. This has got to be the worst pain I`ve every had! The pills help, but this hurts! Back to the doctor tomorrow to see if they are still hanging there. Time for another pill.

Been there. Twice. And I'm only 20 - inherited genetic problem.
Best thing? More water than you can handle, plus cranberry juice. No idea why, but I always had cranberry juice recommended to me, and both times it's helped a lot.
Good luck! They say it's the closest pain wise that a man will ever feel to giving birth.

I've been drinking enough water and Gatorade to float a battleship! I've heard the analogy about giving birth. I think I'll name the first one that passes after the wife. How long do these damn things normally take to pass?

What a coincidence this thread got started! I'm trying to pass a kidney stone as we speak!

This is my third episode! I know the impending symptoms by now, so I took some leftover pain medication from the last occurrences. Now I'm only dealing with minor discomfort.

Actually, as far as the pain analogy, I asked a woman I know who has a teenage son and once had a bout with kidney stones. She told me emphatically that her labor was less painful!!!

I really gotta do better with what I eat and drink...especially drink!

BTW, you should pass the stone within three days of the initial stabbing pain, at which time, the discomfort will be minor. But it will take about a week before the dull pain subsides.

Thanks for the advice. First one for me, but my sister has had them eight times! Told the wife that the doctor said she had to do certain things to make me feel better but so far, I'm still suffering!

My wife went along with that "prescription" the first time, but isn't buying that advice anymore...

Hang in there...the first day is the toughest! And the fact that your rearward plumbing literally shuts down until the stone finally passes.

Don't worry, I'll be there! If not, you can name it the First Annual Powerpig Memorial Mid Atlantic Mercedes GTG.

Try some Viagra.
If nothing else it will take your mind off the pain.

I sympathise. I'm 39 and had my first one about fix months ago. Truly horrific pain. Best description I can think of is getting kicked in the nuts except it never goes away. I drove myself to the emergency room which was an interesting half hour drive as I couldn't actually sit in the car seat. I had to sort of prop myself against side with my left foot and lean with all my weight on the armrest. The morphine didn't help so they gave me something the nurse described as morphine times seven. It did work some so when the g/f picked me up I asked for another shot which killed the pain. Also sent me on a *very* weired trip but that's another story. Anyway. Took two days to pass but I was on meds the whole time so didn't feel very much. Quite amazing that something that small (in my case literally just like a few grains of sand) can cause such agony.

- Peter.

Well I've had two also. About 5 years apart. They seem to trigger when I have to face a tragedy in the family. For my first one the doctor gave me a pill that just knocked me out. And the next day the stone passed. I had to use this screen cup and catch the little bugger so the doctor could analize it. Turned out to be pure calcium.
The pain is truly unbearable.
