Gunman Opens Fire on VA Tech Campus, Killing 21, Injuring 21 Before Being Killed

04-16-2007 12:32 PM
By SUE LINDSEY, Associated Press Writer

BLACKSBURG, Va. (Associated Press) -- A gunman opened fire in a dorm and classroom at Virginia Tech on Monday, killing 21 people and wounding another 21 before he was killed, police said.
On the Web site, Tech reported the shootings at opposite sides of the 2,600-acre campus at West Ambler Johnston, a co-ed residence hall that houses 895 people, and said there were "multiple victims" at Norris Hall, an engineering building.

All entrances to the campus were closed and classes canceled through Tuesday.

"There's just a lot of commotion. It's hard to tell exactly what's going on," said student Jason Anthony Smith, 19, who lives in the dorm where shooting took place.

Aimee Kanode, a freshman from Martinsville, said the shooting happened on the 4th floor of West Ambler Johnston dormitory, one floor above her room. Kanode's resident assistant knocked on her door about 8 a.m. to notify students to stay put.

"They had us under lockdown," Kanode said. "They temporarily lifted the lockdown, the gunman shot again."

Awful. Just awful. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims.

They're getting better, more and more everytime this happens. Columbine was like 4? Unfortunate indeed. I've said more than once, Americans need more time at home, and on vacation.

Now they say, "25". Have to wait for the smoke to clear to get some straight answers from this carnage.

You save and scrimp to send your kids to college, so they can get a good education and a chance at a better life.

Then this happens.

Guy in a Steven King novel said to a bartender,

"Only way you'd get any meaningful gun control laws passed in this country is if one Congressman a day got shot. And even then, it'd take at least two weeks"

The "right to bear arms" crowd and the NRA are going to put the same old spin on this, as usual.

A lot of wailing and hand wringing, and then nothing will ever happen. Same as all the other tragedies. Welcome to Baghdad USA

Here we go again. Sorry, Jim, I usually agree with the things you write, but I don't think another attempt at restricting guns or gun ownership will make one bit of difference on something like this. It really IS people who kill other people. Maybe guns are a little more efficient, but people who are out of control or full of malice and homicidal will find a way.

It's very sad indeed but you can't point a finger at the NRA or gun control or the right to bare (bear?) arms. If you want a gun you can get a gun....

Mindless, reactionary rhetoric.

Look how fast someone sets up a debate. Look at the situation for what it is.
