Toyota 7MGE straight 6 question, oil around plugs

Hi,

I have had symptoms of bad valve seals on my antique 87 Supra. This is a straight-6 engine with the plugs directly on top of the piston. So there is a row of 6 plugs with long valve covers on either side. The plugs are recessed a couple of inches, and each 2 plugs are in 1 "well". #1 and #2 are in one well, 3 and 4 in a well, then 5 and 6. Anyway, I pulled the plug wires off and the middle well with #3 and #4 in it is like an inch deep with oil. I am guessing the only place the oil can come from is the valve cover gasket(s)? Is this typical of valve seal leakage? Does it cause pressure in the valve cover? The compression is OK but a little low in #6.

Thanks,

Mike

Thats just valve cover leaking. Valve seals will cause oil burning on start up

Sounds like the valve cover leaking, my Camry did it as well.

Make sure to clean the mating surfaces well, and when you install a new gasket make sure its seated. Then use a torque wrench so the valve cover seats perfectly. Thats what it took to stop the leak on mine.

Thanks all. Yes I have lots of smoke at startup as well. Also terrible oil consumption. Hopefully I will solve all these problems!!
