Bikers have it much worse. Some of those guys (and girls) spend upwards of $10K, and still no motor!

I can see spending the money on shoe's and shades but anything beyond that is fluff and puff.

I really didn't need that Nike+iPod thing but I already had a Nano so I decided whatever man, it's a good way to track distance. Having the tunes is pretty nice too.

I ride too, but minus my ride, but never with music. Just my shoes and clothes. Running's expensive man. One pair of shoes every two months.

Well my sister is a runner and you really want to spend money on shoes. If you don't your feet will be messed up pretty bad. Her's are like $90 each she usualy gets 2-3 pairs at a time because they only last so long.

Howdy All,
Here we go. For running the dogs in either free coursing or competition. Boots-$350, socks-$10, pants-$70, Shirts-$60 & $120, coat-$220, vest-$45, hat-$70, slip leads-$70 a piece(3), pack-$170. There are a number of other things but this is a good sampling. BUUUUUUUUUT all this stuff has lasted at least 5 years and some of it will last maaaaaaaany years to come. Buy quality.....you can't go wrong.

Yes and no. If you're running 10+ miles, you really don't want to do it in anything besides running shorts and a running shirt. And for marathons, proper socks are a HUGE plus. Sure, you can do all this in your car-washing attire, but for me, it's just not worth the chafing (use your imagination) and blistering afterward.

I used to scoff at $90 running shoes. Now I buy a couple pair a year; the health of my knees is worth it.

Anyway, Kuan, your point is well-made, and I agree. We (or I) do have it good.

Yeah the gear makes a lot of difference. Not the iPod though, that's not necessary. Makes things easier, plus, they last a bit.

Getting the gear dialed in is half of what running's all about. I did 10 yesterday and all of a sudden at 9 the top of my foot started going all tingly. Not something I wanna find out on raceday.

Heck, I only paid $100 for my TD.

Here I thought I didn't run because I was lazy, now I find out that I was just saving money!

What's your next race? I may try the AF Marathon in OH this fall, since Chicago closed (and is too damned big anyway). I'm back at about 6 miles for my weekday runs right now after sore knees sidelined me for a bit. I try to do my long runs on the weekend, and I really need to get back to the pool to lose some more weight.

Hope your foot gets better. Mine did that with my last pair of new Asics. I bought the new model (2120) of my favorite shoe and it felt VERY different; I loosened the lacing and the problem went away.

I'll allow $500 for shoes and some leeway for socks BUT in my own experience I got by running in regular socks cotton Army trunks, Tshirt and a good pair of shoes I never skimped on shoes.

That might be why I hate running so much I guess if I were a bit more comfy I might give it another shot.

Good socks are pretty cheap and make a world of difference for me when I am running long distances. I use the regular old cotton for anything under 10-15 miles, but after that, I'll use Wright or some other running socks I have. For marathons, I also use lots of Body Glide on my feet. The last half marathon I ran was in rainy conditions and I was sure glad I had those socks and that Body Glide. Folks were coming in with bloody feet and I saw loads of guys coming in with blood-trails from their nipples in cotton shirts. I learned the latter lesson the hard way; showering with chafed nips is no fun.

Well, how many miles of forced runs have you logged?

I'm Air Guard. We only run when we want to... (I know, sad). You did your time already.

I just did the Lincoln National Guard Marathon ( I only ran the half) and met a guy who organized a sister-marathon in Afghanistan. One of my fellow team-members for that race ran one of the marathons the Army organized in Iraq. In Lincoln, each state sends a team of Army and Air Guard runners; it's pretty awesome to run with guys like that, many of whom trained during deployments to the sandbox. My hat's off to anyone who can train for a marathon in Baghdad heat or, worse, on a treadmill!

Shoes. I haven't worn a pair of shoes that was south of $200 for at least 10 years, partly because I have a weird, hard to find shoe size, 13E. I started wearing Allen Edmonds back then, and now refuse to go back to the garbage I wore before, regardless of expense. If you ever run into a park bum wearing ragged, holey clothes and a shiny $350 pair of Aldens, don't forget to say hello to me.

Have you ever heard of the Mogadishu Mile?

The most running I have ever done was at Ft. Polk LA our CO was a running freak; in fact most people were disciplined by running a late for duty would cost you 60 miles for the week and that is in addition to your regular PT duties so if weather permitted you could do 81-90 miles if we stuck to our 7-2-7-2-7 mile regimen.

On Friday we got a half day off if we ran 7 miles in full gear, full ruck, weapon.
