Well, depending on your situation, checking out may or may not solve the problem. If you were going to die a painful lingering death because of disease, would it be a mistake? Similarly, if you don't believe your life will get any better, you may just check out to end the suffering and not because of the injustice of the universe. I look at it like a car. Well, you spent gobs of money trying to get it right. Finally, you throw in the towel and sell the thing, losing whatever you put into it because YOU feel that the cost of keeping it exceeds the cost of cutting your losses. Now, somebody else might come along and decide that the vehicle is salvageable. However, from your point, it isn't.
