Anybody sell a higher value car on Ebay?

Your experiences, please.

I mentioned in another post that I'm selling my wife's inherited Porsche on Ebay. As of now, it's about 36 hours in, 1200 views (shocking!!!) We're asking what I consider to be a bit beyond sock drawer change.

What can I expect, good and bad?

You got a bid! No, I've never sold anything of high-value on ebay. Apparently, it's done all the time. I'd want to talk to the buyer, and I would suspect that any buyer of a car like that would want to talk to you first.

That car is f'n gorgeous. I absolutely love it, and I'm shocked it's not bid on by more people. You'll sell it, it just has a small audience of buyers.

Thanks. I really came to appreciate how pretty it was last week when I was waxing it to get it ready. I kept adding more and more wax because I loved how it looked. I see why the Porsche guys are so crazy about their cars.

A friend sold 2 high value cars on Ebay. One, a Cuda, got just under 6 figures for a "good" condition driver.

Both sold without the buyers looking at them in advance, and both shipped from NY to Calif!!

I don't get it it personally, but that's just me. First $2k can have my SLC, and I'll throw in the shop manuals.

That's actually the part that surprises me. No calls yet. I have a whole web page with 100+ pictures, and nobody's asking to see it.

But my friend who sold the Cuda said he didn't get a call from the buyer, only from wannabes. Buyer flew in from Cal AFTER he won, looked at the car briefly, and then flew out and had it transported.

The other car, a 29 Ford Tudor, the buyer asked him a number of questions about the color, nothing else.

People are strange.

Now what should I do?

Just got my first "what do you want to stop the auction and sell it to me" call?

And my witty response....

"DUH... I DUNNO. I got to talk to my wife."

Help me. What should I do now?

If there's already a bid, just say "Sorry I'm going to let the auction run its course. Thanks for asking."

Maybe it's just me, but it's always bothered me that many auctions just end early or that the seller throws the caveat in there that the vehicle is listed locally and may end at any time. Either sell it on eBay or don't (general comment, not directed at you, al). It kind of surprises me that eBay allows them to end early due to prior sale since they lose out on their fee.

Swamp, after thinking about this overnight, I agree with your point.

I've had 2 people offer to pay me to end it early. Both seemed to be decent, although only one is close enough to visit.

Putting myself in the shoes of someone who is waiting to put in a bid (I do the same thing), I'd be pissed if it were ended early. I've watched a few ended because the seller "lost" the item or the dog broke it.

I'll do the right thing.

Yes And after that experience it has convinced me not to sell lower value cars anmore on Ebay. Cars that are going to retail +$15K bring in a more qualified (read smart) buyer. Selling inexpensive cars will give you deadbeat buyers, wantabee's, and tire kickers.

That's a really nice car man. If I weren't so practical I'd give you cash for it right now.

I've bought and sold a fair amount of stuff on eBay, including the purchase of my '00 Jeep Wrangler and the sale of an '85 International E500 box truck.

With my Jeep I financed it through eBay via HSBC. The process wasn't complicated but it was a fairly lengthy process back and forth between the seller, myself and HSBC. Other than that it was a smooth transaction.

I know as far as bids go, they are usually fairly sparse the first few days. Bidding always increases the last couple of days. I was bidding on a '56 Chevy wagon rat-rod last year that I was the only bidder on for the first 3 days but the auction ended up having over 60 by the time it was done (I bailed at about the 35 mark since it went over my personal limit).

If you don't have a BIN price just keep going. Probably would turn out to be an agent for a rich gentleman in Lagos Nigeria who will pay you greatly for your car.

I spoke to the gentlemen, who seems to be a nice older fellow from Connecticut. He's coming to see the car next week. I'll ask him to bring his friend from Nigeria.

He doesn't seem to be the Ebay type. He said he just missed out on a car he wanted when someone outbid him at the last minute. Seems to be a decent serious fellow who is not used to the Ebay game (or computers).

(I'm not dismissing your comments that if I posted it on Ebay, I should sell it on Ebay. I just happened to like this fellow, who seemed to be serious, but not wanting to spend an excess amount of time "playing" on Ebay.

Since we all know that the high bidder on Ebay can sometimes be a tire-kicker, if I meet this fellow and my initial instincts are correct, I suspect I may be tempted to work with him, especially since he's close by, and will be putting in the time and effort to see the vehicle. Certainly avoids any misunderstandings.)

That's why I raised the question with you all.

What do you want to get from the car? Know what you want, if he offers it sell it to him. Don't get greedy, if you have a serious buyer who is standing next to the car and willing to write a good check screw ebay just sell it.

When I was selling my SD on ebay the only person to look at it was the one that bought it. But I told them that if they were willing to make me an offer over $1k that night it would be theirs.

If you sell it on ebay, ebay gets a percentage, so if you can end it early for the same money your ahead.

I always put in the ad that the car is also for sale locally, and I reserve the right to end the auction early if the car sells that way. Go with your gut, if the money's right, and you feel good about the sale, then you're ahead. If you feel like you sold it too cheaply, then you are behind. It's gotta feel right.
