Verifying someone's military service?

The other half (the one without car hobbies) wants to hire someone to do some work around here. I'm all for giving people a chance and helping them out when they are in need, but there is something about this person that bugs me.

I'm not sure if I want them to have access to our home when we aren't around.

I bring up the military service bit because they've either had a fantastic and interesting life, or they are in possession of a fertile and detailed imagination. If its an issue of the latter - I'm not sure I want to be involved in someone's alternate reality.

There are a lot of resources on the web for this,

http://www.stolenvalor.com/foia.htm

discusses in detail how to access someone's records.

Since there is such a wide variety of legal and life experience in the people that post here (hah!) I figured someone might have some knowledge of a like situation.

I don't think our Veteran will be cooperative in signing a DA-180.

I did one of those minimal on the internet background checks to verify they weren't actively wanted for something and they come up clean, however, there are no social security or military records tied into those things - just alot of previous addresses. There are two that are military - but neither matches the story.

You can get basic stuff @ military.com that will tell you the branch and rank reported @ the time of data capture from experience of checking known records it gets most of it right but the rank for some reason. PFC's show up as Sgt's Majors as e-4's but you can at least verify that were . the Foia stuff will give you about the same stuff. If you want to verify a Ranger or Army specialty something like that shoot me a PM, if you want the discharge record ie Honorable or whatever FOIA can get taht.

The number one kill all for Rangers is to get the class# and the pictures are posted on the internet but that can be not accurate because some Soldiers get the tab for serving with a Ranger unit. Since 99% of the SF guys are Rangers you can get a good picture from there.

.

I know someone who owns a private investigation company, its cool stuff. I don't know how much one of them costs I imagine they are not cheap, but they seem to be able to find out anything.

But if this person does give you a bad feeling, I'd go with it. At least for me my gut is usualy right, I get in trouble when I don't listen to it.

thanks you guys...

the way I see it - they can come over and cut that $#%@$# English Ivy off our trees, without making themselves at home on the couch.

My spouse says "we need to be kind to people in need," and I appreciate his generousity - but we can be kind without 1) giving away the farm. 2) getting overly involved in someone elses life!

I don't know if Military.com purposely screws rank up or not but I have not found it to be correct one single time, like I said Majors are privates, privates are SFC's SFC's are PFC's ect. But the MOS stuff is usually accurate unless the person changed MOS's.

I just entered my name into the search at military.com. It came up with a bunch of people, 2 with my middle initial and one of those had my rank correct. Couldn't go any further as they required a login.

What time frame were you in? I use it for buddy finder and it is almost always incorrect for the late 80s-early 90's. Especially for people who were in and out of reserves.

Ahh so they had time to catch up, although I was searching with a Vietnam coworker for his stuff and he was a SFC that was listed as a 1LT.

I did check out ADP's issue BTW and it looks as if (almost crystal clear) like the guy is telling her the truth.

I just remembered I have a Military ID card that was issued in 2003. That might have something to do with it.
Now I'm curious. What's required to log in?

Yes.

I checked my name and came up with about 100 guys who were/are in the USN with my name. Damn! Using advanced search I got it down to a couple of names, one of whom was me. But it was minimum info. Name and dates of active duty. Didn't have rate/rating, duty stations/ship.
