Exclamation Canon Digital Rebel SLR Question

I currently own a first generation Canon Rebel Digital SLR camera. That was Canon's first consumer level digital SLR camera.

It is rated at 6.3 megapixels.

I am vey happy with it and it meets all my current picture-taking needs. I have a number of other Canon film cameras (and a couple of Minoltas) but I never, ever use film anymore.

Anyhow, I was at a local camera store to buy my son an inexpensive point-and-shoot digital camera. Got him a Canon Powershot A550. Not their most expensive camera, but if anything happen to the camera it is not a big loss.

Anyhow, while at the store I saw two of Canon's new "consumer" digital SLRs. The Canon XT (8 megapixels) and the Canon XTi.

Now I want one!

Do you guys and gals know anything about the new Rebel XT or XTi?

With Father's Day coming up, I can always give myself a present.

I would appreciate your comments, suggestions.

And yes, I would keep the original Canon Rebel Digital as a back-up camera.

Yep, 10 megapixels is a LOT of pixels.

Even m son's little point-and-shoot now comes with 7.1 megapixels.

You're not making this any easier for me.

I was hoping that someone would tell me to be sensible and not "waste" money on more cameras.

I bought my professional photographer (her ex kept all the equipment) fiance an XTi for Christimas. She just used in a wedding and said that it does everything that she needs it to do. She compared it to a 20D and 30D and chose the XTi.

I may hang on to them. I am such a pack rat.

I have the Canon Elan 7, a Canon EOS 10S and a Canon Rebel (film).

I also have a MInolta XE-7 (all metal body, metal shutter curtain and built like an old Benz diesel) a Minolta X-700 and one of my favorites, the Minolata SR-T 101.

I am going to hang on to the film cameras. I couldn;t get any decent money for them and my son (who loves old planes and old cars) loves old cameras.

But I really have a hankering for the Digital XTi. I find that with a good printer, prints from digital cameras have outstanding quality. Plus I like the fact that I can manipulate images without having to lock myself in a darkroom getting high on D-76.

some of the reviews that I've read so far say that the XT has a better CMOS and the images are clearer and sharper even at ISO 1600. The XT's body felt better in my hands though.

What cameras do you use? what do you like? What do you recommend?

I took these pictures with my A620. The image on the screen is so large, I would need a monitor twice as big to see it all. I had to resize it to 800x600 for photobucket.

At work I use the Nikon D200, D100 and I still have the D1. Home digital use is Canon and I have a 4 x 5 Cambo, Nikon FE2, FM and F. Every now and then I jones for the smell of Rodinal and working in a dark room. Use what feels comfortable in your hand.(no pun intended).

Hey Larry- Those photos are great.

OK...it came today.

My kids all got together and bought me the Canon EOS digital Rebel XT with the BG-E3 battery grip.

The ordered by mail, while letting me think that they had not bought anything "special."

I already love this camera.

I got the camera this past Saturday (June 23). They went out and got it at a local camera store. I guess they had been waiting till I decided between the TXi and the TX models. They surprised me with it on Satuday!

I am trying to master RAW files (come on you guys, get your heads out of the gutter, RAW files is not what it sounds--Mistress would know!)

The camera is super small and light (a lot smaller and lighter than my original Canon Rebel Digital camera). The battery grip makes it easier to grip, especially with longer lenses. Plus you can use AA batteries, which is a big plus if you are shooting some place away from a battery charger.

Here is a link to Canon's official website:

Canon Digital EOS Rebel XT

Mine comes with the black body.

BTW, does anyone know why Canon's long telephoto lenses are all white, when every other compnay makes them in black?

Anyway, I will probably sell my old Digital EOS Rebel. I don't need two digital SLR cameras.

Ernesto, I believe their longer lenses are white to cut down on sunlight (and therefore heat) absorption. They use a lithium glass in many of their longer telephoto lenses that is fairly delicate and subject to damage from expansion and contraction.

Thanks...and here I thought they just wanted to stand out in a crowd of photographers...

Now I have to get a decent medium-tele lens.

Maybe Christmas...
