They're only good for up close and personal engagments. Sux for long range work. Stings yer hand too. If you have a Keltec, you can get an extension that fits on the mag and it completely changes the nature of the beast.

Snubbies are quite effective on phone books, evening gardeners, and appliances.

Methinks Taurus Arms makes an 7-shot alloy snub in .38 Special. But, in a pistol, I'd use frangible bullets for home defense...over penetration, ya know.

For home defense the best thing is a shot gun. A short barrel -- less to aim, more to spray.

Keep everyone you love (pets too) behind you and keep the subject in front of you. No matter who, no matter how stressed, you can't miss the shot.

Using a handgun for home defense isn't really a good idea unless you qualify often.

The problem with a shotgun (apart from a sawnoff which is illegal) is it's a little bulky to get through doors. A snub nose is a close quarters gun and can easily be pulled from under the mattress, bedside drawer,,,,,, or pillow if your that paranoid! I keep mine loaded with shredders which you can't get anymore. Two doses of that in the chest will render the patient fatally ill.
