I got a new computer!!

My Compac is DOA, I was nursing it for the past 6 months but it just died on Monday. So I went to Best Buy and picked up an HP tonight. Its pretty sweet, the best computer I have ever owned. Vista actualy runs right on it, unlike my Emachine at the office. I only paid like $530 for it, but I only got the computer itself, keyboard, and mouse for that.

The only glitch is that I got this "NEC" moniter for it thats pretty nice, but it has cut out twice. As soon as I hit the power key it starts back up though. Should I return it? Its a sweet moniter though, very sharp. I think its 15 or 16 inch's I forget.

I'd return it if it isn't any hassle. When we bought our HP, we had to return it 4 times because they wouldn't power up. Once we got one that worked though it has been nothing but smooth sailing. I like HPs.

Well I bought the floor model of the screen, and saved like $40. I wonder if I can return it, might try. They are pretty dumb at Best Buy, I'll just make a stink and get one in the box for no charge.

If you can wrench on cars, you can easily put together your own computer from all the shelf parts for cheaper and much faster than you would buy in a box. Just find a phillips head screwdriver and go to work. It amazes me when I read stories about hardware defects in brand name computers. I think I've had my server running for over a year without ever requiring a restart, but then again it's running linux.

Again, if you can DIY on a Benz, throwing a computer together is child's play.

That's true. But Hat doesn't want to deal with it, he's not a computer fella... it's not uncommon.

I did, I paid the extra $40 for a new moniter in the box. The floor model was kind of beat so I think it was a good move. It was also missing some parts which I see now that I got a new one. So far the new moniter is working perfectly.

All and all I am happy as can be. When I have some extra money I'll get some better speakers. They have some nice BOSE speakers I was looking at.

I could have gotten a 19in, but the 17in moniter is pretty big.

danwatt,
everyone i know including myself that has ever built their own computer has had nothing but problems. Even people that paid a professional to build theirs has had nothing but problems, i don't understand what it is or why that is, but from here on out i'm sticking with store bought. So far so good with my gateway laptop, aside from the occasional all red screen(dont know what thats about..), it works perfectly. Had a friend with an HP that was 6 years old and still worked well, when i got a laptop i either wanted a gateway or an HP, good choice.

I have never had a problem with a home built pc. I have been building my machines since 1998, and have never had any sort of a problem.

Well it depends on how many things you want to get involved in. Building my own computer would require me to devote many hours into learning how, and how to trouble shoot the thing as well. I rather not, I have other things I rather do with my very fleeting free time. If you do it as a hobby and have fun more power to you.

Buying a new computer off the shelf 45 minutes.
