There is a whole bunch of truth in that.
Years ago when I was the boss of a home builder, the Owner told me this:
There was a study done with monkeys. In one group, the monkey pushed a button whenever he was hungry and he got food. In the other case, when one monkey was hungry he had to get another monkey to push the button. The monkey that showed signs of stress was the one who had to push the button to feed the other monkey.

Not a psycho boss, but a psycho customer.
I am currently inspecting work by the local gas company. The contractor installs a new main, tests it and gases it up. Then we transfer peoples' services to the new main. When all the transfers are complete, we kill and abandon the old gas main. Finally, all streets and sidewalks are permanently repaired/ repaved.
Our work is governed by LAW, both fed, and local.
One "lady" screamed at me for an hour this morning that she didn't want that gas pipe on the front of her house. I remained calm, tool her contact information and passed that along.
The standard answer is to advise the customer that they do not have to have that ugly pipe on the front of their house. But. But as soon as we finish our work, and kill the old main, she will be off the gas service. And the charge to come back at that point and install a new service is borne by the customer, for thousands of $$$.
I had quite an adrenalin rush from the event.
