I think many of the HD TV units have DVI inputs so they can be large TV size format.

I use a Dell P1110 21" CRT monitor at 1600x1200. I got it for $30 and it's been the best screen I've ever used, even compared to Apple's old 21" CRT.

I'm looking for a good 22-24" LCD to replace it for under $500.

If font size is a concern then you need to look for a monitor with a larger dot pitch.

Look at the attached chart...
The monitor sizes with the largest dot pitch are 15, 19, 22 and 26.
The 16/10 are widescreen aspect ratio and the 4/3 are normal.
Your 17" monitor has a 0.263 dot pitch. If you buy a 22" you will have a 0.282 dot pitch. A 21" won't help you much.

If the monitor is 25% larger, could I not go to 1024 x 768 and, effectively, have everything on the screen appear 'approximately' the same size?

The difference between .263 and .282 is insignificant on a percentage basis.

Try simply using a larger font.

Using an LCD in anything but its "native resolution" is going to give you poor image quality.
I would go with a monitor that has a higher dot pitch and then tweak DPI and font sizes as needed.

Damn you guys have some impressive systems! I am happy with my 1280x1024 17in LCD moniter.

One day when I have some cash to burn I'm just going to use a 30in+ flat screen TV.
