Yeah, you could buy a lot of land up there for peanuts. Here is where I swam, Old Woman Bay. This is a great shot of the lake...

That sounds like an interesting life, Vince. I've always been fascinated by the big freighters coming and going. I would think that one would really feel like a citizen of the world working on one of them.

Same here! When Dad still lived on Galveston we'd spend hours sitting at the end of the seawall with a cooler of beer, watching the deep-drafts come and go through the roads. Something of those choir meetings must have worn off onto Thing One; he did a stint in the CG and is now at TAMU Galveston working towards his 3rd officer's ticket.

Here an interesting Superior wreck: U.S.C.G.C. Mesquite

I remember arriving and Jamacia Beach and going for a swim @ 3:00 am to wash the stale beer and puke off my shorts. Hind sight being perfect I'm not sure if swimming at night in Galvaston was one of the smartest things I have ever done.

Weird. The last place Dad lived on the island was in Jamaica Beach...I would not swim there in the daylight. The house in the center of the screen was his until abour 4 years ago.

The days of being a citizen of the world have pretty much died. From 1977 to 1985 I worked on a large RO/RO running from Tacoma, WA to Anchorage, AK. The comapny, Totem Ocean Trailer Express http://www.totemocean.com/ guaranteed 66 hour delivery year around. It was a grind - 12 hours to load and fuel in Tacoma - 54 to 60 hours at sea - 8 hours to discharge and backload in Anchorage - back to Tacoma. The ship, the Westward Venture, was new then, and the company was only two years old, so there was a sense of comraderie. But after 8 years I was weary of Friday in Tacoma, Tuesday in Anchorage. I finished with eight years running to Valdez (arrived 4 hours after the Valdez went aground). I was C/E on the OMI Columbia, which just happened to be the tanker (then named Susanne Onstad) that was used in the '70s remake of King Kong. Beautiful ship, huge comfortable quarters, big Burmeister & Wain slow speed diesel, absolutely the best folks I ever worked with and for. But you don't see much of the world anymore. Nice short commute every morning though!

I suppose one man's adventure can be another's drudgery, especially after years of doing the same thing. Then again, that probably beats being gone for weeks at a time going to more exotic locales.
