BMI calculations

I am bored and my psychology text book is supplementing it ( ha this chapter is on motivation)

ok.. I am on Hunger motivation and the BMI calculation is in chapter.

ok so here it is

step 1

multiply your weight by 703

step 2

square your height in inches

step 3

divide step 1 by step 2

If your BMI is

18.3 or below underweight
18.5-24.9 Healthy weight
25.0-29.9 Over weight
30.0 and above obese

Where does Don Rank?

my calculations gave me a BMI of 18.0

you don't have to share.. but I Thought it would be useful

Hmm. 27.5 here. BMI says I'm overweight. The Navy says I'm ok (but just barely).

I think it's important to point out that BMI calculations don't take body composition into account. It's quite possible to have a "healthy" BMI while at the same time having an unhealthy body composition. OTOH, those of us who lift a lot of weights can have an "unhealthy" BMI while maintaining a healthy body fat percentage.

I'm underweight by this calculation. Might have something to do with my Marfan's. OTOH might have something to do with the fact that I'm tall and thin....
It takes all kinds to power the planet.

Muscle mass is much more dense and therefore, heavier than fat. That's one of the weaknesses of the BMI thing I've seen on the internet. Using calipers or something like that is probably a better indicator of per centage of body fat.

BMI is cr@p. It should be thrown away and never used again by anyone (especially by non-doctors).

Did you know that system considers Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and George Clooney overweight?

Shaquille O'Neal is considered obese.

33.74 but I'm a fat ba$tard Well, more just beer bellied.

I would have to weigh about 200 lbs. to squeak into the healthy weight level. My h.s. playing weight for basketball and football was 240 with constant exercise. It ain't ever going to happen!

Therein lies the flaw with the BMI calculator. I'm definitely heavier than I need to be or should probably be, but 240 would be about the absolute lowest I could get.

I'm 24. BMI is a pretty good indicator for what you should weigh. Unless you are really big or small boned, a bodybuilder or strength athlete, or an elite marathoner, BMI tells you what you should weigh if you had healthy bodyfat percentage.

According to the BMI scale, I'm a 35 (6' 5" @ 300lbs). No way in hell will I be able to safely loose 100-150lbs. I'd be a d@mn twig!

Most of the articles that quote BMI stats on stars like the above are based on height and weight calculations given out by the star's publicists. I saw one once that showed Tom Cruise and said the BMI ranked him as overweight because he was 205lbs at 5'7". First off, Tom Cruise has never been anywhere near 205lbs. At his height that would either give him 20 inch arms or a 50 inch waist. I'm guessing that he's 165 tops and that would put him in a normal BMI. I don't doubt its a similar story for for Pitt, Damon and Clooney.

You might be surprised. Muscled people look bigger than they actually weigh. You may also be carrying a lot of internal fat. I'm 5' 6" 150 and even though I can bench my weight and ski 50k I'm pretty fat compared to my normal friends.

Bottom line is, if your stomach is larger than your hips you should lose weight.
