CompUSA closes shop

http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-9831235-7.html?tag=newsmap

Forget Black Friday. For the best deals on gadgets and PCs this holiday season, look no further than your neighborhood CompUSA.

The embattled electronics retail chain was dealt its final blow Friday when it was sold to Specialty Equity, an affiliate of private equity firm Gordon Brothers Group. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed, but the immediate result is that Specialty Equity will close all 103 CompUSA stores in the United States, according to a press release issued late Friday.

They closed most all of the stores in the CA metro areas last year and there were quite a few sales. I got a ton of obscure notebook parts for $0.99. I even got a brand new Targus mobile adapter cheap becuase they mismarked it and forgot to put a "1" in front of the $49.99. Too bad. Too much competition.

Damn, I liked those stores. What now, Best Buy? Oh well, I got the Gateway I'm typing on right now from them.

Well there are many smaller stores at least in NY area and they would give better deals than these big chains most of the time but your best bet is the online stores like Tiger Direct and Newegg. Their prices simply can't be beaten.

Go to Fry's, Fremont isn't too far. You'll just have to elbow your way through the herds of nerdy software programmers

As someone else suggested, theres always Fry's. Personally, I try to avoid Fry's just too crowded for my taste and their advertising borders on bait and switch. I believe your in Redwood City now? If thats the case and you find yourself slumming deep in the south bay and you can go to Micro Center in Santa Clara. Same stuff as Fry's without the hassle of actually going to Fry's

I like Micro Center. They're a lot better than CompUSA ever was. The one near me closed up a while ago. That's got to be a tough business to be in. If it's not managed VERY well, it's hard to make a profit.

Very true, the Fry's customer service and returns is nothing short of absurd. It usually takes an hour to return something since there are 4-5 checkstands and two people working and literally 5-6 people standing around the timeclock and watercooler watching them work....at least down here in LA.
