Went to parallel park my 86 420 sel last night (140K miles) and I put it in reverse to park. When I tried to then shift to drive to pull forward, it would not go into any other gear. I shut it off, and now it will not start no matter where I move the gear selector. I notice that when I try to start it, I think I hear the fuel pump start, but the starter will not engage. Also I noticed that when I turn on the key, the backup lights are on, which seems to indicate it is struck in reverse. It drove fine before this, and I had the transmission serviced about a month ago and everything looked fine then. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Your car will only start in P. Let's try the easy first. Take a flash light and look down next to the shift selector and see if anything has fallen down and lodged. e.g. Quarter, Pen, etc.
