Bug-B-Gone! How glad were you to get rid of a car?

Christmas came late. We just got rid of the 2002 New Beetle. What a POS. The plastic interior fell apart upon touch, the electrical system was a nightmare and maintenance could only be done by midgets with x-ray vision.

The only other car that made me this happy upon sale was a 1975 Lincoln Continental. I bought it in great shape with 40,000 miles for $700 during the 1979 gas embargo. Three months later, gas supplies loosened up and I sold it for $2400. Woohoo.

What car were you happiest to get rid of?

My 94 VW Golf GTi16v. VW bought it back from me under lemon law. Electrical failure, interior heater core busted and spewed coolant all over. Final blow the crank put a hole through the block.

The most painful automotive riddance was a '77 Lincoln Mark IV. I had to give it to charity, because noone would even pay a couple of hundred bucks for it.
It had a lot of reoccuring problems, that drove me nuts, like that modulator unit. It just kept stalling, whenever it pleased like.

The body and interior was immaculate. CA car no rust, no dents ....

Other than that, I don't think I was ever real happy when one of my cars left for good. But I also learned to appreciate the relief, when room was created for something new

'84 S-10 Blazer w/2.8L that my brother and I had for 4 years (for me from senior yr. at H.S. to 3rd yr. at UConn. Went through 4 transmissions from 2 different local shops w/good reputations. One actually did me the favor of $h!tting the bed while still under warranty. No towing, no hard off-roading, no plowing, certainly no racing. Just a P.O.S. design-wise.

I remember when my father first found it we were so psyched, 4x4, A/C, cloth, power everything. Compared to our parentally supplied beat up F100 and F150 it was practically a luxury car.

The only two vehicles that stand out (in about 100 owned in 43 years) are both trucks.

First place goes to the one ton Ford conversion van with 6.9 diesel and overdrive unit. The truck was a disaster as a tow vehicle since rearward visibility was about nil. My kids would get carsick in the back too. Then the block had or developed one of the famous cracks that started in the main bearng web and went up into the cylinder wall.

Second place goes to the 87 (? not sure what year) 3/4 ton suburban with 454. I took it on trade for my 94 suburban. The guy I got it from was an acquaintance from the old car club of Lafayette. He told me it had been recently rebuilt including new bearings pistons and various other things. On a short test drive it seemed fine. On a longer drive the oil pressure went down to about 15 psi after it warmed up and it ran insufferably lean so it had less power than a good 350.....so I rebuilt the motor and did something that helped the lean running and sold it finally for less than I had in the motor.

Really probably the only two out of the hundred or so in which I really got stung. I have bought plenty as parts cars or not running and usually they are about what I thought they were in the end.

And about every time when I sell one I am pleased to see it gone. A couple I regret selling, my 84 300sd and my 92 260e I really probably should have kept.

And I did have mixed feelings when I sold my 280 e euro fifteen years ago so I bought it back three years ago and am using it for autocross.

I also sold my 83 240/300d about four years ago when it was surplus. And about six months ago bought it back and will be using it as a daily driver once I get the body redone.

So at present I own three benzes all 123 bodies and all have fresh motors (relatively) and stick trannies.

I had an 86 Subaru XT turbo that was a POS, I was happy to unload that rolling wedge. When my parents unload their 2000 Jaguar S Type, I will be giddy to see that piece of crap gone. Can't park it on a hill unless you put the hand brake on before taking your foot off of the brake pedal, two window regulators broke, the valve covers have warped causing burning oil smell when you run the heat/ac, the interior fabric on the A pillars just fell off... it's a Ford in every way. Oh, and it is currently selling for less than my 2000 Honda Prelude, having lost more value than my car was purchased for new.

I remember FIAT, Renault, Puegot and Yugo all had to leave US due to the quality issues with their car. Renault and Puegot are lovingly called Runnot and Pukegot. Several in my college had the Alliance which was sheer junk.

Thumbs down

The first new car I ever bought. It was a new 2001 Volvo C70 coupe, a Firemist red HP turbo.

I had really wanted to love that car, and kept it totally immaculate when I had it.

(235 hp turbo: Welcome to torque steer!!!)

This was such a $42,000 Lemon that it was in the shop almost more than on the road.

A Lemon Law lawyer had to be hired, and he helped us get Volvo NA to buy back the car after a year and REFUND the purchase price in full, less mileage travelled, which wasn't very far.

What a sorry introduction to the world of brand new cars. Like rape being an introduction to sex.

I was glad and sorry to see it go the day I took it back. Do you understand how the emotions could be so conflicting?

That's a good one!

'89 Eagle Premier. Paid book ($2600)for it and the tranny went out a few months later. Then the tires were cupped which apparently also wore out the shocks and cracked the brake pads. Then the trip/mileage computer failed (for $400 I went without it). Then the ignition switch failed and the shop that installed a used one wired my horn into my cruise button, and I lost my cruise control in that fiasco. The speedometer broke so I drove by the tach after that. The final blow was the head gasket. It took me a 2 gallons of water a day, one to get to work, another to get home. The muffler developed a hole while selling it. The guy that bought it then sold it to someone else seeing what a POS it was. That guy came to my parents house demanding his money back because the guy he bought it from told him to pound sand. Uh, yeah, my parents told him they didn't sell it to him, and that I wasn't going to give him any money either. What a nightmare that car was!
