Do you know anyone who is racist? In what way are they racist, and do you say anything to them about it?
I know there's a few racists on this board but most people just tolerate them rather than feed into them, but this isn't real life.

I've known a fair number of thoughtless racists but I think only one deliberate thoughtful racist. He was a student of mine, a man in his late 30's or early 40's raised in South American by Nazi parents who had fled Germany after the war. He was able to articulate a clear Aryan/Christian/Nazi ideology and defend it pretty respectably.

No, I generally don't say anything to them. We have whole corporations down here where people get paid to do it.

The closest I've come to a classic "racist" was a kid in my class in elementary school. Not surprinsingly he was somewhat of an a--hole.

There is plenty of it, not only here either.

It's more subtle in Scandanavia and England, that I saw, but is mostly a reaction against illegals (Mostly muslim) that abuse the hospitality and generosity of the host country and that still refuse to assimilate whatsoever.
That's natural.

But in Peru, it is horrific. Just about the worst I have ever seen, anywhere. It is not hard to see how and why, the Sendero Luminoso gained some traction, with them, (at first).

In the Indian colour scheme of things, black is far from beautiful. Right from black models to black to be brides are rejected on the basis of their colour alone. This might seem weird coming from a guy, who was born fair(I am kashmiri, it cant be helped) but still I find this fair thing extraordinarily weird. Nowadays you can see lots of dark pencil thin models like Carol Gracias etc on television, but that doesnt mean the Indian Society is as accepting as the fashion world.

Hi, I know a South American racist too, he's from Chile. I always knew he didn't like blacks or 'dark' people, but a couple of times I've seen him drunk and when's drunk he carries on about 'gringo white trash'. Now this guy has blond hair, blue eyes so I never thought a phrase like that would come out of his mouth.

No, all of the people I've ever known are exemplary human beings without a single ounce of prejudice in them.

Seriously, we are all somewhat racist, aren't we? Black, white, red, yellow, whatever. We all harbor prejudices toward other people. I grew up in NC and there was plenty of OVERT racisim there. When the sixties came along and it became fashionable for liberal white folks to have black friends in order to demonstrate how open and un-prejudiced they were, even that was fueled by racist impulses.

I think all of us tend to lump people into groups and think/talk/act negatively as a result of this monolithic way of seeing people. All we can do is be aware of it and try to see people as individuals. Anybody here ever heard the Southern Baptist preacher, Will Campbell? He has written ad preached a lot on this subject. He's very thought-provoking.

I grew up in a lilly-white suburb of NJ and have since moved to the more integrated DC area. I often cringe when I hear people from back home making "funny" remarks about blacks or Jews. It makes them look like dullards. Then again, they are the products of their environment.

It's easy to point it out when you see overt racism in another person.

It's much harder to see the same trait in yourself.

Rarely is the case where a person has not the slightest bias toward or against another race.

Yes, abroad as well. When I was in Italy, Trieste was one of the coolest towns I visited but also one of the most insular. As for the inevitably problematic nature of humans not getting along, move on. Life is the same as it always has been; nasty, brutish and short despite how much we like to lie to ourselves and each other. However, media does make for a great faux catalyst to reality when you're too lazy to think for yourself...

I lived in the north and in the south while growing up. I saw racism but not like the popular press portrays it.

If you drive up to someone and shoot them because of the color of their skin, it is racist. If you drive up to someone and give them $100 because of the color of their skin, it is just as racist, maybe not as hateful.

Racism has become a profitable industry in the US. Like all profitable industries in the US, it is corrupted.
