That seemed pretty equal opportunity, politically.

A lot of folks have died because someone else thought God was on their side.

I heard a show on NPR the other day that said a lot of Southerners had faith crises after the Civil war because they (and the northerners) thought God was on their side and coudn't understand why if there was a God, they lost.

As Lincoln was reported to have said ( more or less). I care less about whether God is on my side than whether or not I am on His side.

As usual Lincoln had it right!

Lincoln had a hard time not pardoning deserters and folks who fell asleep on guard duty.

I have a hard time evaaluating Mr. Lincoln. I was taught that he was one of our greatest Presidents, and "saved the union".
As I get older ( can't help that), I realize that the really tremendous growth of the federal government can be credited to him, that the concept of "States's Rights" more or less dies with him, that he trampled the Constitution in significant ways.
Yet it seems clear that whatever he did, he did for what he considered the good of the country, and not for personal gain. I still cannot read his 2nd innagural address without it bringing tears to my eyes.
For all his warts (ha), I wish we had statesmen of his moral qualities today, instead of the self promoting/wealth-accumulating posers we have both in office, and running for office.

Like most "real" people, he was a combination of good and not-so-good qualities. In that way he reminds me of Henry Ford, who likewise combined some real social vision with some real disturbing opinions.
