Standing seam roof noisy
I attended a funeral today of a local tile setter who I have been friends with and worked with for about 30 years.
The service was held in a very new church building which had a fairly handsome overall appearance but suffered some glitches in the design detailing and the materials selection and execution. We were sitting in the very quiet sanctuary listening to the minister speaking words of condolence and comfort when I noticed a noise like someone hitting a plastic bucket with a yardstick. I thought What the heck is someone doing? I turned around because it sounded at first like it might be coming from the balcony....but there is no balcony. So I am looking up and around seeking the source of the sound. I cannot be sure but I am pretty certain that it was the sun hitting the standing seam roof and causing the aluminum to expand and the noise was the metal popping as it slipped past the fasteners to the deck. It continued throughout the entire service. I can only say that there must not be much insulation between the inside metal decking (which is exposed over bar joists) and the metal roofing on the top of it all. The building had the feel that it was not designed by an actual Architect with proper training in materials and design. If it was such it was pretty decent looking for the work of an amature. If it was done by a Registered Architect, I am embarressed for the profession. I can only imagine that the congregation cannot be happy to hear that while trying to worship either. The church is maybe a quarter of a mile from my friend's house. My son and I used to go fishing there in his pond from the time my son was maybe six until he discovered girls. Tom W
