Todays "No Duh Award" goes to...

How about a “Well, No Sh-t." thread?

We nominate this aviation crash write-up:

Beechcraft Super King Air B200, D2-FFK. Crashed into a mountain. Weather was poor (rainy and foggy). Preliminary report suggests the aircraft was flying below the minimum safe altitude over the mountainous area.

“Preliminary report...” ??

Like they’ll need to investigate further as to whether or not the plane was flying too low when it hit the mountain.

Wouldn't a gps system interfaced with topo maps and a warning alert be of some value here? I realize it wouldn't be accurate in regard to presenting man-made navigational hazards, but a system that essentially notifies you that there is a mountain range ahead that is taller than you sounds handy.

Well, maybe the mountain was just too high . . . . That will have to be looked into.

I mean no disrespect in this.

As the world watched smoke and fireballs on TV, NASA wasn't prepared:

Obviously a major malfunction.

This reminds me of the book about the CIA I just read. Many many times during its history the CIA could not predict world events even after they had been reported by CNN. What a colossal waste of money!

So much for that old song "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" . . . Apparently, THAT mountain was.

One way or another, NTSB will say it was a pilot error.

Such a system is in use in larger airline planes. It's called terrain avoidance warning system (TAWS). It contains a database of the globe and gives a display like a weather radar. If the plane is approaching earth above it's current altitude, the display shows red in front of the plane and gives a verbal warning.

AA went to coupled (GPWS) forward looking radar altimeters after the 965 crash in Columbia.
Good systems, both.

You don't know that for sure. Maybe they'll find the mountain at fault. Let's just wait and see before jumping to conclusions.

Realistically – It’s almost (99.9% of the time.) always the pilots fault when an aircraft hits something/anything.

Also 99.9% of the time – When I’ve hit something. I’ve always made the remark: “Well, who the hell put that there?!”

Last week, while zipping through the Hill Country in the 530F, I clipped a Cedar tree. DJ calls “Strike!” over the i-comm. I replied: “Well, how the hell did that tree get there?!”

Being the smart-ass she is, she goes on with some botany-logical ramblings…
”Well Sweety… It all started with a fertile seed and some moisture….then there’s soil and carbon dioxide….”

I reached over and smacked her.
