. . . . wha . . ? Where am I? What time is it? AM or PM? God, what a weird dream. I just dreamt I was corresponding on some glorified telegraph line with a crazy person for hours and hours . . . Oh crap, it wasn't a dream. Sorry dude, I cain't aklimate myself to your brand of "thinking." Wish I could help you, but it's past clear by now that I can't. Ya'll take care now, y'heah? |

Can you recall what seminal event preceded the first suicide bombing from Iraqis directed at US forces? Hint: it was shocking and awful. I wonder which 40 watt bulb in the Pentagon came up with the shock and awe crap? Maybe lurch Meyers. Oh yeah, they were going to tremble in their boots and acquiese to our every whim. Yeah, like they were strangers to bombs and war. TW's post above on the definition of 'surrender' is better than what I'm going to be able to come up with. I'm sorry your self esteem is based on some macho notion of military supremacy. You haven't shown me much cogent thinking on these matters, just a puffed out chest and jutted jaw. It's ironic that some of the most virulent anti-commies in our land support something that is really similar to centralized state planning, as long as it's directed towards some other country whose resources we covet and who we think needs our benevolent overlord-ness. Best of luck there. |

Sheds new light into your thinking. People are not smallpox. There is a bit of good in the worst of us. And a bit of bad in the best of us. People are people, we are all human. All of us are guilty of some pretty crazy ideas. From thinking that our individual religion is the right one and is worthy of killing for. To thinking we are entitled to whatever we want, despite the consequences to other people. |

It is funny sometimes the Freudian slips we miss. Here is the book the term "shock and awe" probably came from. http://www.amazon.com/Shock-Awe-Achieving-Rapid-Dominance/dp/1406940062/ref=pd_bbs_sr_4?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1203222875&sr=8-4 It is basically about swift and brutal psychological warfare meant to reduce your enemy to permanent slaves, both physically and mentally. If you have any doubt that it is not exactly what we are doing in Iraq, go read the book. Thanks RichC :joker: |

2. Suicide bombing in Iraq is a very recent phenomenon -- at least 2 years after what some people term the "shock and awe" campaign. Incedentally, that's not a military term, BTW. It was coined by a retired officer in a book he wrote concerning the lethality and destructive power of modern scientific weaponry. If you'll recall, that phase of the war worked brilliantly -- almost no loss of life on our side and huge loss of life on the enemy's side. May all future wars fought by our nation be similarly lop-sided. The follow-through after major military combat operations had ceased was, by all accounts (even within the DoD and State Dept), terrible and we have been paying the price for that lack of planning ever since. 3. More ad hominem. Get over yourself. 4. Huh? |

Well, I suppose Hitler did some good to Germany so he isn't all that bad. That we can agree on. |

I really cannot seem to wrap my head around who the enemy is in this situation. |
That would be a problem.

This "war" is about wiping out a particular "idea" that has support amoung a large population...the idea that we are going after the supporters is what needs to be strengthened, not torn down and apart.
If you're trying to get rid of cockroaches, you first spray the poison around and kill the "stupid" ones...the smart ones aren't going to die so easily...then the next step is... Clean up the mess that helped breed the cockroaches in the first place. Any landlord is going to testify that that process is one hell of a job. Well, we're trying to finish up the spraying part and trying to clean up the mess that was there BEFORE we got there (even if we did contribute to it a bit prior to "offing" Saddam). The problem is: The f**king press (and some on this forum) refuse to acknowledge the good our troops are trying to do over there (both in Afganistan as well as other areas where we're stationed) and they keep on dwelling on the fact the some pin-headed morons, with Kodaks, wood-piled a few detainees and took some pictures. And that makes EVERYONE bad? And as a result, we're suppose to pull out because of a few misdeeds by some idiots? We prosecuted those folks, and I say we continue to prosecute anyone that decides that they can fly in the face of decency. But, don't expect me to give that level of civility to those cockroaches that breed the hate that allows them to strap bombs on women and men/boys alike and send them off to disintegrate themselves around innocent people. Because, if we ignore that level of inhumanity, then why do we give a fat rat's @ss about Dufar (sp?) or any other country where one group of people is wiping out another...based on what? My religion is better than yours? And, to get this thread back on track...I whole-heartedly support the US torturing a few cockroaches to get information...wholesale torture, no...selective torture, damn straight! And any pansy-a55ed crying about how mean we are, as a country because we have to do this, is simply short-sighted, ignorant, mouth-breathing, hyper-panic-induced ignorance on how the real world is working...utopias are for the foo-foo college-twinks that couldn't fight their way out of wet paper bag with the bottom missing and the side ripped open. I learned, many years ago, that there's a whole sub-species of Americans that expects everything to be "all rosy" and everyone should kiss their @55es because they preach peace and love (as long as you're kissing up to their ideas) but they'd stabbed you in the back and bury your body, in a heartbeart, if you disagreed with them. I'm going to ignore them and leave them to let them figure out the "wet bag" conundrum... As it is...they'll blame someone for wetting the bag, removing the bottom and tearing the side open...and they'll wonder "...How come no one is going to fix the bag?" |
I won't add to any of the arguements made here either way about the war. You guys seem much more versed than I. I will say however using this analogy. If you have ever had a friend or family member is a nursing home , you probably have seen all types of injustices all types of probable corruption and lack of responsiblity. Should you decide to step in and start trying to fix these things you will find that day after day week after week of hard work you find more and more problems. Working alone you end up getting more and more tired and discouraged because you just seem to find more to work on. Your "own" seperate problems build as they are abandoned for lack of time/money. You can't turn back and just leave all those problems unsolved as you can't very well stop caring plus you created some of the problems trying to introduce order. You find people who said they would "help" don't or end up being part of the problem. Now eventually you will spend so much TIME MONEY AND SANITY that at some point you can not help anymore because you have nothing left. Now if can get the ones we are helping plus "others" to step up and make significant contributions of resources we actually could get somewhere. As I said many of you guys are very well versed and can add to this or show me where my ideas are less than correct. (If Iraq can't assemble a worthwhile security force they should assemble a huge pile of cash for relying on ours)

Another issue is the fact that the "others" have their own agenda. Why do you think Russia, France and Germany, didn't want to take action? Because Hussein owed Russia big bucks. France and Germany had contracts signed and ready to go when the embargo was lifted. If Hussein was gone, who was to say the new government will honor those contracts? |
