MacBook or MacBook Pro?

I think I have finally outgrown my G4 iBook, and time for me to upgrade to an Intel Mac. I just haven't made my decision on which one to get. I sort of like the MacBook Pro because of the aluminum case, and larger screen. The price of the MacBook's are more near what I want to spend though, so it's a toss up. Surprisingly the last of the iBook G4's are still worth a bit of money, and my friend is interested in buying mine if I buy a new computer

My middle kid is a jr at a local university and she has the G4 iBook. She bought it herself new several year ago out of her savings. I'm going to buy her a replacement this summer and have been wondering which one to buy her so I'm definitely interested in what you decide and why.

My own opinion is to buy the best computer for the job that you can afford. My kid is a business major, not a science or art major so I'm thinking she probably doesn't really need the extra horsepower of the Pro line. What do you think?

I like my MacBook. It's prety amazing what it can do on 1meg of RAM. You can have a huge pdf file open, itunes, iPhoto, Firefox, and a mail client open all at the same time and experience hardly any delays. I really like the anti glare screen in the MacBook pro though.

If you look at some of the Mac forums, there are many users who experienced random shutdowns, to the point where it developed its own acronym, RSS, for random shutdown syndrome. The problem was with the heatsink that all the earlier models had to get replaced due to a shorting wire. There are other issues regarding systems no longer recognizing the battery or the AC adapter. A logic board replacement will set you back about $800 out of warranty, or the price of a decent notebook.

My kid's $1400 Macbook is now a paperweight because of a liquid spill. Even before that, the optical drive slot collapsed, the top case cracked, the LCD display had distortion, and the power adapter failed. It still looks cool though.

About 6 months ago when my school started back up, I broke down and bought a MacBook Pro 17 inch.

Its pretty nice, and its got all the bells and whistles.

I liked the big screen, but the thing that sold me was the backlit keyboard.

Its just sooo cool.

I think I will go with a MacBook Pro, but I should wait until I get my tax returns done, and all my rebates
