Mistress Goes A Huntin- HDTV Help Please

O.K. Tax refund is in the checking account screaming to be let out and I have decided to treat myself to an HDTV. I have it narrowed down to the Sharp Aquas(sp) 42 incher. Now here's my problem- where to buy it? I went to Microcenter in No. Va and they had it for 1299.00, then I look at Circuit ****ty and they have the same thing for 1799.00 can anyone tell me why the ginormas difference? Oh and what other kinds of HDTV's do you guys like?

I don't know about Circuit City, but Best Buy price matches.

If they carry the same tv, they'll match Microcenter's price.

CC will beat the price by 10%.

Make sure you both models of Aquos are 1080p models. This has become the new standard for HDTV, and a lot of manufacturers are discounting their previous generation models to move them out. The 1299 TV might not be 1080 models while the 1799 might be.

Or it could just be a huge price variance.

I can't personally speak to the Aquos, I have heard good things about them. Ditto the 780p vs 1080p possibility. I'm far from a videophile but I'm real happy with my Vizio. Except that I should have bought a bigger one.

I'd be willing to bet that's it. Your choices for 42" Sharp TV's are:

Aquos:
LC-42D64U, 1080p - $1400
LC-42BT10U, 1080p - $1600

Non-Aquos:
LC-42D43U, 720p - $1300

Prices are from newegg.com. Add $99 for shipping.

Mistress - as others have said, make sure both Aquos models are 1080p. Even if they are, one could be a newer model and hence cost more. The market moves so fast with HDTVs that 'new' models are often replaced by updated models within months. They'll often have the same hardware panel specs (i.e. LCD panel itself) but they can have upgraded image processors, improved case options, etc.

The Sharp Aquos series are well regarded and have established a good rep. I'm also looking at buying a 42" or 46" Aquos.

Will there be a surround sound purchase, too, or does that have to wait for next year's refund?

I have a 40-inch Mitsubishi LCD (1080p) and a 26-inch Sony Bravia S-Series (720p) and have been very happy with both. The little one is actually my dad's, but he only uses it two months of the year (at his summer home) and it's mine the rest. The big one is mine, bought it for a couple grand in September and the novelty still hasn't worn off ... it still feels like Christmas every time I walk into the living room and look at it.

As far as Sharp goes, I don't know anyone who has one, but if you like the picture, the features and the price, you'll probably be happy with it. Never heard of Microcenter, but Circuit City usually has decent prices, so I'll echo these guys in saying make sure you're looking at the exact same model. I bought my TV at Tweeter. They're more high-end, which means a salesperson actually helps you when you walk in the door, and they actually know something about the product they're trying to sell you and are willing to share that information with you. I don't care if it's the best price in the nation, the level of service (and the fact that I know pretty much anything they sell is a solid product ... they don't sell anything completely crappy there) makes me feel better about coughing up a huge pile of cash for what I consider an important purchase decision. Some of the big-box stores, CC Best Buy et al, amaze me in the fac that the salespeople, while usually friendly, seem completely disinterested in attending to me. Maybe it's because I dress a little bit like a hobo, but it irks me. The other day I went to Best Buy to purchase a wireless router, and I honestly had to mill about for 20 minutes before a salesperson became available ... and when he did become available, he acted like I was a huge nuisance because I wanted his advice on which router was best for me. I'm not the kind of person who scoffs at big-box stores on principle, or goes to high-end stores to look important, but I honestly just get tired of stores that sell major electronic devices as though they're selling plastic cutlery and toilet paper. Sell me a TV like it's a TV. A lot of times I end up in high- or higher-end stores (even if my hobo attire and dirty old diesel sedan don't quite fit the mold there), whether it's electronics, car parts, furniture, hardware, pet products or whatever. My one exception is clothing ... I've bought pants at the dollar store on more than one occasion without questioning the idea.

But I digress. As far as your TV hunt, I'd shop around and look at what's available. I love my Mitsubishi and I like the Sony Bravia line (my bro in law has a 46-inch Bravia XBR, beautiful). But I've also heard plenty of positive reviews for Vizio, which costs about half as much. Depends on what you're priorities are. If you want info on what's available and personalized advice, I'd look for a smaller, more specialized store ... even if you decide you can't afford their prices, you might learn something useful.

BTW, is the tax refund you speak of THE tax refund? I thought that ridiculous deal wasn't happening until mid-year. I ain't seen no check yet ...

BodhiBenz- The refund is the regular tax refund not the bonus we are suppose to receive. Someone said something about the "refresh rate" on the HD's and thought that figured into the price as well.

I agree you should be treated equally as well if your dresssed in shorts or a tux...
