The new MB's are pretty good, but I won't trust a Range Rover as far as I can throw it.

They don't use the 722.6 like the XJR's, they use a ZF gear. Not to mention that the British are not known for good electronics...

Hehehe.... My client has 03 or 04 Range Rover, and he says its been one of the cheapest cars to run in his fleet. Says its been in the shop for one non scheduled repair, and he had it back the same day.... He was driving a Range Rover Sport for a day while they changed the oil in it.... Said he was thinking about trading in the RR for the sport.

Test drove a C230, hated it.

Test drove my IS300, loved it.

It's all what you want out of a car. The Is300 drives so much nicer its rediculous. Its not always about the logos on the car, for me its about how the car drives, and how i feel driving it. I think the difference is i'm an enthusiast, but i have no brand loyalty. I'm sure if i wanted an S class then i wouldn't be as impressed with the Lexus LS, but i'll cross that bridge when/if i come to it.

Sometimes I think that Land Rovers reliability is unfairly bashed. They've improved over the years and obviously their not at the top but I have yet to meet an owner who has had nothing but horror stories.

I know a few people with horror stories, and I know slightly fewer who love them.

I think they are pretty bad. After the XJ8 ZF blow up to the tune of $6k I don't trust those things anymore. And I have never known any British car that didn't have a bunch of electrical issues.

In my opinion Lexus has only made 2 good cars. The Lexus SC300 and SC400. Both coupes that give some Mercedes coupes a run for their money. Unfortunatly for Lexus they stoped production of the SC coupes in 2000.

If we're going to use anecdotal evidence, then there this:

1) My 1998 E320 wagon with 70k miles on it was one-owner, all records, blah, blah, and it needed $2500 in work (AC, bushings, etc.) in the first 6 months of ownership (15k miles).

2) My 2001 LS430 with 65k miles on it is one-owner, all records, blah, blah, and it's needed NOTHING in the first 6 months of ownership (15k miles).

I liked driving my wagon more than I like driving the LS (which isn't bad), but I'm glad I sold the wagon and bought the Lexus. For daily gotta-make-sure-I-get-there transportation, the Lexus wins.

Ha ha, I still drive the 300E every day!
The only experience I have with Japanese cars was my first new vehicle, which was a Toyota truck which NEVER broke and got almost zero maintenance. The other was a company car Maxima which got regular maint. and dropped the trans at 50k.

So?
If ya hate Lexus, that's one thing. Fine. But the Japanese have made them selves VERY rich copying just about EVERYTHING, and making it better. They've been doing it for, oh, about 50 years now. Nuthin new.
The Japanese have been copying for far longer than 50 years. Their optical industry was built on copying German camera and lens designs--that goes back to WW2 era, or before.
In copying, you must have a talent for knowing WHAT to copy, and then the ability to build the copy to very high standards.
The same can be said for their electronics industry, and their automotive industry--not much innovation, but great production values.
The Soviets also copied the German optical industry--copied to the point of ripping up entire Ziess and Leica plants and shipping then back to mother Russia. Although they "copied" excellent designs, they could not, or would not use the same excellent materials, and QC processes. As a result, they earned a reputation for making poor copies. Some Russian cameras and lenses are absolutely first rate; while others are very poor. One of the "benefits" of time is that it allows the poor copies to die off. As a result, many of the remaining Russian cameras from the 50's and 60's are quite good, as the poorer ones have failed in use, and been converted to scrap. They represent an excellent source for anyone seeking interchangeable-lens film cameras in 35mm or MF. Just be sure to get an agreement to return if the particular sample is not up to snuff.

Seriously, you don't know?

Look at the pancake VW engine, and make it water-cooled instead of air-cooled, and you have the Subaru 4.

I know that, just seeing if anyone else knew.

So did they copy the AWD system from Audi?
