I'm really surprised that he took it back up...........once you're safely down on the runway..........leave it there.
Maybe landed way too long..........??? |

Not necessarily.
They could have given him 23 with some lower numbers far out on the approach. He crunched them, and said he’d take it. Or even with the 33/49 numbers he could have said ok. Foolish, but he calls the shots. (Not to mention, there could be a few zillion other factors involved here.) I’m thinking he asked for 33 though. Having the ---- scared out of you, and perhaps a reality check via his FO (not to mention the noise that had to make), can cage any possible ego issues and make hearts and minds follow the path of common sense: “I’m not trying that again! Let’s pick another runway.” I’ve got a hunting party out after the CVRs for this one. Also - That could have been an ALS approach. The plane was doing all it could. At the last second, when the gust pushed it off. He could have overridden the AP and just got out of sorts with it pdq. That’s like jumping off a skateboard at running speed. Your feet better be moving before you touch the ground, or…..

After that thing did like an aluminum sled, I'd be a wee bit concerned about flying too damned far lest one learn the hard way about the ins and out of controlled flight through wing warping.

Ego correction?
Considering he would risk his plane so stupidly to begin with, the pilot probably sees himself as some kind of hero. Unless he was out of gas, or betting big euros, what lead to this decision? disclaimer: I have only taken flying lessons in a little Cessna so maybe I'm over-reacting.

http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,23307283-2703,00.html GERMANY: HURRICANE EMMA, SCARY LANDING IN HAMBURG (AGI) - Berlin, mar. 3 - The exceptional ability of the pilots of a Lufthansa flight saved the lives of 131 passengers of flight LH 044 from Munich to Hamburg. Shortly after 2 pm last Saturday the Airbus 320 was about to land when a sudden gust of wind from Hurricane 'Emma' lifted the right side of the airliner, making the left wing barely miss the ground at a speed of 250 km/h. The quick reflexes of commander Oliver A., age 39, and co-pilot Maxi J., age 24, added power to the engines before it was too late and the airplane regained altitude. Lufthansa spokesman Wolfgang Weber explained this morning that "the pilots reacted in an extremely professional manner. They executed a manoeuvre that is often attempted in training". Damage to the wing has already been repaired and the airliner is back in service. The episode was widely resonated by the media, but the customary german discretion kept them from fully disclosing the names of the involved pilots. Panic aboard the Airbus was enormous. One passenger later stated that "these are moments that I will not forget as long as I live". 'Emma' has already claimed 13 victims in Germany and damages worth hundreds of millions of euro. |
