WEBCAM- I need some help please.

A few misguided souls think my studio at work is a public domain and I need to install a webcam. Can you guys point in the right direction and tell me what I need to get and how it works?

Thanks for all your help. And changing the lock on the door is not an option.

Yeah, what are they doing in your office. Can't you just put a password on your computer ... or are they using your other tools? I ended up labeling all my stuff and still had to go around about once a week to collect my rulers and exactos. People would act like it was theirs, until I would show them it had my name on it.

Mistress - webcams are cheap, but the trick is in the software and how the network is connected. I've yet to see a webcam service that is more than say, 75% reliable. Plenty of issues with connectivity, streaming issues, etc.

Is there an IT dept that can handle it for you?

Get yourself any webcam and use Microsoft's Powertoy tool called Webshot Timer to record and capture image snapshot at specified time intervals. If you own a Logitech webcam and you are using Vista OS you can download their free program called Quick Capture Gadget which will record on any motion detected in your premises.

Absolutely. My guess is raiding the chocolate dish and sleeping.

I like this for covert operations:

http://www.webcamstore.com/consumer/product.php?systemid=475

I used to have these in a data center.
http://www.webcamstore.com/consumer/product.php?systemid=452

I could monitor what the operators were up to from anyplace.

At a previous job, someone used to steal lunches. One day I crushed exlax tablets into the mustard on a sandwich and planted it in the fridge. It actually outed the perp.

There are exlax chocolates that you could fill your candy dish with.

I disable my computer each night before I leave, my main concern is the $50,000. 3-D imaging system coming in next week.

Well, at least it's not YOUR money. If they care about their investment, the doctors will do something about it.

We used to have a lunch thief as well and i nailed him really good. He stole my lunch one day when i was out sick and the next day I told him I spit in it-- never nailed my lunch again.
