Bill Buckner

I have been a Yankees fan for more than 40 years, but I have to hand it to the Sox and the crowd at Fenway for the way they handled Bill Buckner's first pitch yesterday.

Here's a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJeD62glbyM

Buckner was a great player. He did not deserve all the grief he got after the Mookie Wilson incident. The main thing I remember about that series was the way Buckner played his butt off, despite being injured. I don't remember what his injury was, but he was definitely gimpy.

I only saw the highlights from the ceremony, but seemed like a really good deal.

I'm sure Sox fans don't hold as big a grudge against him since they have actually won a World Series and 'the curse' is over. I wonder if they would have responded the same if they hadn't won one? Probably would have been the same, but who knows?

I've always found your posts enlightening and thought-provoking.......but you're a 40 year member of the evil empire? Ugh.

I agree though.....the Sox still pissed away game 7, that's often forgotten by the media machine.....and they wouldn't have made it that far anyway without his gritty play.

Cut me some slack. I was 6 years old, my home town Washington Senators sucked, and the Yankees still had Mickey Mantle. I don't think I had much choice. I also stuck with them through all the lean years.

Just some early season ribbing.......a 40 year old fan is much more tolerable than one....oh say, starting around the Jeter era.

I loved the Mick, although too young to watch him play.....I remember reading his biography as a kid...my liver still hurts.

I'm in the middle of a Mets/Phils series right now.....good times, good times.

Another Yankees fan here....

Hats off to the Sox fans. Dang, Bill still looks like he could play a bit!

Buckner was a helluva player, IIRC he batted in over 100 runs that season. They tried to get him to come to the last ring ceremony but he wasn't ready I guess. I wonder if Red Sox Inc. made him a nice offer to get him to attend and get some well deserved adulation. A couple WS heals a lot of wounds.

For me, yes it was heart-breaking, but they had ample opportunity to redeem themselves and pissed those chances away. Could have made a defensive switch at 1st...
