Question Tortilla Storage

Last night I made myself some burritos. For filling, I used a pound each of pork chorizo and refried beans, plus some sliced jalapenos and some salsa. They were quite good, but I noticed that the tortillas were a little tough. Today, I had the leftovers for dinner again, and the tortillas were a little tougher. They were in a reefer when I bought them at the store, and then I kept them in the reefer at home. At other times, I've bought tortillas that were displayed at room temperature and stored them the same way. I don't think they got tough as quickly. So, my question to you is: how do you store your tortillas?

You have leftovers? How can that be?

At the table, the tortillas are on a plate, under a towel and sitting on a heating pad.

Short term storage in the fridge is okay. To refresh, I put a few of them on a plate with a damp paper towel to cover and microwave for less than a minute to steam a little moisture back into 'em.

Once open, I think they mold pretty quickly if not refrigerated. Most of the one's I buy (Mission) come in a ziplock bag. I have noticed the toughening phenomenon to a degree but usually with the thicker brand tortillas.

When they come out of the fridge kinda hard, you can also spread them out on a baking sheet, spray them with Pam and heat in 300° oven about 3-4 minutes. This works great for softening up corn tortillas for rolling.

I keep the ones I use to make wraps in the frig. When I make burritos, there are seldon any left. If there ARE leftovers, I fill them with the meat, beans, cheese, etc. and refrigerate those.

I never thought of that. How do you reheat them? Just microwave? How do they come out?

tortilla warmer: which can be as simple as a cast iron skillet large enough to hold one tortilla. high heat 20-30 seconds on each side should do the job. wheni lived in albuquerque i used to buy them fresh and if i didn't refrigerate them they started to smell pretty 'yeasty' after a day of two (not that they often lasted that long!)

I was referring to reheating whole burritos. I will try the skillet thing though, since I have one.

I've been slapping the naked tortilla on a plate and microwaving for 10-12 seconds with ok results.
