Dallas Mavericks would've pounded the Warriors this year

I've had mixed feelings about Nowitzki at times (and Cuban all the time) but they way they beat Phoenix made a believer out of me. At first, I thought the trade for Kidd was not well founded -- especially when they were going to sacrifice Stackhouse as part of the deal.

Dunno why but I really like Stackhouse's game.

But maybe it's going to work out after all.

The Warriors gave me a headache much of the season. Still had a good record but I HATE the 3 point shot. It's a momentum killer unless you're on a hot day which is rare, since they go to it before they get the heat going.

Stephen Jackson is no great player, the guy's about 70% flake and Baron Davis is apparently too much of a party animal to be consistant.

Andres Biedrins shoots near 60% in FG, good rebounder and is more grist for my mill that the NBA's best white players are almost all Europeans or Argintineans.

Monta Ellis plays the kind of offense I like -- high percentage, taking it to the hoop, baby! His 3 pointer is weak so he plays ball the way it should be played. Can't play much defense, but oh well. If they had two forwards in his and Davis's class, they might go somewhere.

But Nelson doesn't keep his bench active enough. Always saying he can't risk a loss because of them. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. He wore his top 6 out.

Oh well.

an NBA thread? Most wonderful. Seriously, this is going to be a great playoff run.....which should deflect attention from the Seattle debacle.

The Jason Kidd trade obviously isn't working. Chris Paul and Dwight Howard are taking the next step. And my lowly Sixers are in a perfect positon to upset the old, cantankerous Pistons - nothing to lose and plenty of momentum.

I do love me some crazy Stephen Jackson......he's much more than 70% flake though. Baron had great numbers in the first half of the season but he's wearing down.

I read like a Bill Simmons column.

EDIT: more on point - CMAC, do you go to the games? The sports guy has been banging on the Warriors fans.....saying they lost the energy/vibe that was so overpowering last season. Any truth to that?

I haven't watched a single NBA game all year... I suppose I should at least give it a chance again. The whole Shaq thing made it patently obvious that the NBA is trying to fabricate "superstars," which turned me off immensely. I guess it's always been that way -- the "lesser" players are called for petty fouls while Shaq, et al barge over anyone in their path (or travel every other possession). Remember the playoff game a few years ago when Kobe led the Lakers "comeback" that consisted, among other transgressions, of him pushing a defender to the floor, stepping on him, and grabbing the inbounds pass for another 2? No fouls called. I think that was the game that prompted Ralph Nader to write a letter to the NBA!

Anyway, I'm not much of a fan of that kind of selective enforcement of the rules. Guys like Shaq (who I like as a "civilian," BTW) and Kobe are good enough as it is. They sure don't need the refs' help! Maybe it's gotten better this year; I wouldn't know.

I always get confused when you two post on the same thread. I never know which CMAC/CSC I'm dealing with.

Yah - you're referring to Game 6 of the Laker/Kings series. I think he knocked Mike Bibby (before he became washed up) down and no foul was called.

I think the officiating has been slightly better - mostly because of the officiating scandal last year (sad but true) and further scrutiny.

Mike and Mike touched on it this morning.....but I totally agree. The young talent in the NBA right now is insane. Here's an all-under 25 team, starting five.

Dwight Howard
Lebron James
Carmelo Anthony
Chris Bosch

Throw in Kevin Durant and whatever will become of Ogden.....the future looks great. Duane Wade is only 25 too.

Easy -- if the post is level-headed and intelligent, it's mine. If it's a touchy-feely, vleeding heart liberal, it's cmac's. (Sorry cmac, couldn't resist -- just teasing) But (ahem) I DID register my username first!

Glad to hear the officiating might be improving. The talent is there that no external help is needed to establish "superhero" status players; let's hope the trend continues. I had better tune in for a game or two, I reckon.

Haha, I was going to make a liberal joke - but I opted to leave it out, seeing as how it's an important day for liberals in PA today.

I enjoy you both and thankfully, your avatars are distinctly different - and not a boring car like my own.

Hmmmm....if I were to whittle down to one series (other than my beloved Sixers)......I'd probably choose Suns/Spurs. That's a late-round matchup being played early. Hornets/Mavs is probably a close second - mostly due to my Chris Paul man-love.

Yeah, I'm a SA man myself. Well, Bulls first, but SA since Duncan and Robinson were/are mainstays. Classy guys!

Sorry about the lame liberal joke, cmac. I think you leave Berkeley in your location description to bait folks, though!

BTW, guys, what do you make of Team USA's relative failures a few years ago in the international arena? I'd like to think that our selective application of the rules for "superstars" may have hindered their performance at the international level, where they're not protected. Maybe I'm way off, though; I didn't watch many of those games. Maybe they were picked on by the international refs, or maybe they just plain stunk it up.

At lunchtime today there was a special on (I think it's still on, as a matter of fact) ESPN about Duncan and Robinson. What a duo.

The Seattle debacle. Sigh . . .

We moved to the NW in '67 when I was 15 (from NM). It was the Sonics expansion year. They played one game at St. Martins college, right next to OlyWA where we lived. It was with the Baltimore Bullets and my dad somehow got courtside seats at one of the corners. It was Earl Monroe's rookie year, or second year, I forget -- this would have been early spring '68.

Also still had Gus Johnson. I knew nothing of them at the time (what I wouldn't give to relive that experience live, right now). Johnson was like the original Dr. J. Incredible moves for a forward and Earl, well, Earl is/was one of the top 5 guards ever, IMO.

I saw him again in Seattle mid 70s with the Knicks -- scored about 35 points with some blinding quick turn around moves.

I saw Russell, Chamberlain, Jerry West, Lenny Wilkens, Nate Thurmond, Willis Reed, Walt Frazier, Bill Bradley, Rick Barry, and more at the Seattle Coliseum. I was there when they were runners up to the Bullets and then beat the Bullets the next year. Seattle's only league title in any sport (hockey maybe?) ever. The town about went nuts that night. They had Paul Silas, the mighty oak, those two years. Dennis and John Johnson also. A very tight, under-rated team, IMO.

Oklahoma City?!?

But, to the present, I've not been to a single Warriors game in person, sorry to say. My work schedule is so full. The fans have seemed pretty boisterous to me. They had an attendance record for the Denver game that they needed and lost. Denver outplayed the **** out of them. Don't know Iverson gets his skinny legs and 160 lbs to do that but he smoked them that night. I think they do a thing with the fire marshalls to gradually let in more people so they keep having state records for attendance at an NBA game.

Their two starting forwards, Jackson and Harrington, are just not mature and deep enough in their game, IMHO. And Matt Barnes must have started eating junk food or something after his mother died (no slam intended, that's a toughy) cause he looks way skinny and weak compared to last year, when he was about the most exciting white American forward I'd seen in years.

Davis can be very good but he disappeared too often this season. Who knows. Also, trading J. Rich may have hurt them more than they thought it would.

But Nelson should have gone to his bench more, IMO. Bellinelli is a great shooter with potential but he rarely broke a sweat. I'm sure the NBA would love to stoke up the Italian viewership by having him see more floor time, and he could possibly have contributed.

Shaq inadverdently slammed Baron Davis to the floor this year with his forearm. No call.

Traveling is hardly ever called anymore unless it's 4 or 5 steps.

The brotherhood will be paying you a visit soon. A little "re-education."

I dunno, the Lakers are actually a likeable team for me this year. Odom is some kind of forward and the Gasu, whoa, I haven't seen a white dude that size move that well in a long time.

Bryant is an ass, but damn, the guy has some skills.

Exactly what I'm talking about. Why not call the foul? Make the "superstars" earn their status, don't help them. They're the last ones who need help... geez.

I think the A's are playing 600 ball and aren't they tied for 1st place?

I'm giddy. I love me a good NBA discussion.......and that's a great post. David Stern and the corrupt ownership in Seattle should read every post like that and realize WTF they've done. It's incomprehensible. And anytime you mention Matt Barnes, it's an automatic laugh from this guy.

I'm slightly younger - but I came of age in the Kemp/Payton era (back when the glove was still the glove) and dear god, I still get chills watching those Kemp dunk clips on YouTube.

I've let my season ticket membership lapse these past few years......but I proudly watched the little guy (Iverson) take a beating every night at his apex. Practice issues aside, of course......he's the kind of guy you want on your team (I'm sure I'll take heat for that). Very much like Garnett though, in leaving everything on the court, every night. I'd love to see him bring home a championship....either of them, actually.
