Gas tax idiocy
Clinton and McCain both propose gas tax holidays during the summer driving season. Isn't that exactly what we shouldn't be doing?
It won't save the taxpayers any money. All it does is shift the burden for rebuilding our crumbling highways to other sources of revenue. It will increase consumption. It will be an enormous boost to the oil industry because it will reduce their overhead by 18 cents a gallon, Obama says the gas tax holiday is nutty. He's right. In fact, he seems like the only grownup left in the race. Hillary keeps reminding me of reasons why I will leave that part of my ballot blank if she is nominated. |

I hate to say this, but on this one thing I agree with Obama.

I was with John McCain though when he proposed the extension of a fuel tax break be passed on to truckers though. I don't think John McCain meant it was going to be for everyone, just those that make a living on the road. That's not what the press repoprted though!

It probably is not a good idea in the long run.
Its pandering to the middle / working class, no doubt.....but hey after seven years of pandering to big business a little pandering to the middle class does not seem too bad....refreshing actually! Tom W

Barak Hussein Obama is busy with other issues right now. I have little doubt he'll be on this one pretty soon with his own plan.

Probably. But it will also increase revenue since these people are not idling their cars in the driveway but going places, doing things and spending money. Will that be at the oil company level or will they just not take the tax at the pump?

I think their proposed gas tax holiday does pander to big business. It allows the oil companies to cut 18 cents per gallon off their overhead without them having to do a thing.

IF so, how will it benefit the oil companies like it was stated?

What they save in gas, lets say $200, the probably will make up by spending more on their vacations, trips, etc, etc.

I will take a tax break anytime it is offered. Taxes are too high in general. A big part of the reason we are seeing high gas prices now can be traced back to the poor decisions made by the democratic leadership in Congress over the past forty years.

It's 18 cents.
18 cents. Gas has went up more than that in the last 3 weeks. And whether or not you like where the money is coming from, we still need it for road care. Unless you propose to start filling potholes in your spare time pro bono then you can leave that argument alone. This is token pandering, and will be completely ineffectual to the underlying problems. It's an isolated action that will come just during the months when campaigning will be heaviest. And what will the screaming be like when they turn it off in the fall and gas jumps 20 cents overnight? This will shut everybody up just long enough so that they won't really have to do anything about it. EDIT: And Crowe, please back that observation up with something concrete. Just flinging rhetoric around in here is getting old.

Fuel Tax - B.S....
OUR DEMOCRATIC GOVENOR took our road tax funds and gave it to the f***ing WEAC (Teachers' Union) to pay them off following the '04 elections...something to the tune of $200M...(I may be off a bit on this...actually LOW.) Geez...now we have a funding shortfall in the transportation budget. I wonder why? And our ball-less legislature could have over-ridden this twink's "Frankenstein Veto" (which is what he used to transfer the Transportation Funding over to the Teachers' Union Funding) but 2 or 3 legis-weenies caved in and reneged on their original vote to keep the funding where it belonged... After the Hwy 35E bridge collapse in MN., NOW he wants Transportation Funding Tax increases to "...speed up the repair of the infrastructure..." That's why we need real legislators to replace the legis-weenies we have now...no one owns up to mistakes and theft of the public trust...they just point fingers, utter platitudes and wave like little beauty-pagent contestants at parades when in the public eye... In the meantime...suck money from us sheep for their little "pet" projects, or groups, then blame someone else 'cause we're either not paying our "fair share" or the "other side" stole the candy from the baby's mouth" B.S. in order to deflect the real blame in the funding shortfalls. I've said it before...shut down commodities speculation/trading and put this country back on the "Gold Standard" and watch the problems start to dry up...you can't do wrong when the rules are too ridgid to prevent monkey-play... The Federal Reserve CAN'T make money when it's tied to a set value of a particular product...GOLD. The Federal Reseve CAN'T change that value unless Congress agrees to the change of value (at least that's the way the founding fathers wrote the Constitution originally...to prevent exactly this type of thing from happening), Ron Paul had/has it right. It just that those that DON'T want YOU to see the light denegrate and put down those that have READ and UNDERSTAND what the Constitution is all about...and the Bill of Rights and other Federal Legislation that helped form this country... Gas Tax Holiday? We need an "Incumbent Holiday" A permanent one...and we need a much-better set of legis-weenies (You ain't getting real Legislators right away...what where you thinking? ) that will, at least, read the Constitution (that they took an oath to uphold) and apply it to every piece of 5hit idea that comes before them...if it ain't Constitution-proof, it gets 5hit-canned before it hits the floor. Anyone up for a new set of Congressional Legis-weenies?
