That was back in the day when the line between good and evil seemed a lot clearer. The world's perception of the US was probably quite a bit better than it is today, too.

Americans were less consumers and more producers. People tended to be a lot more self-sacrificing for the good of others. We've come a long way since then. I'm not sure that it has been in the right direction, though.
