Avaition Security
Guys (and Gals),
Im doing some research on aviation security. Im primarily focused on the relationships (linkages) between the federal government, local airport operators (commonly the city or county municipalities) and the private airlines. What I am asking is if anyone has any suggestions, in site, or any general commentary, go ahead and share it. Im looking for ideas to expand upon some research and sometimes asking outside parties will lend you discover something you had overlooked earlier on. I do ask that if you post, provide some justification to your opinion, merely stating "I dislike Southwest airlines service" or "TSA is I know we have some intellegent community members here and Im looking toward you to lend me a hand here. Thanks in advance.

I don't see why we don't have military/soldiers in the airports like other countries around the world. I was traveling the week 9/11 happened. I left to Turks & Cacos on Saturday the 8th on a 7:30 flight out of JFK. We were told to be there "2 hours ahead of time for security reasons." So we got there about 5:15 am, got out of the car and walked right by some brain-deads and into the terminal. We walked to an open cafe for coffee and muffins. We started walking towards our gate at 6:45am. At check-in: "Are these your bags ? YES. Were they with you the whole time ? YES. Did anyone ask you to take something on board that's not yours ? NO" Hand over the 2 suitcases and board. Tremendous security.
I've flown several times since and the only difference is longer check-in lines and taking my shoes off. It certainly gives the "perception" that we're safer.....

I agree pre 9/11 security was sub-par. Thoes questions, presumablly to jog the memories of the absent minded (to ellicit a response other then no) to flag checked bags for secondary inspection.
A major flaw with pre 9/11 security is the cost cutting measures employed by the administrators of the security system (airlines and airport operators) sacrificed security by hiring low paid workers and cutting corners. The standpoint of the government is that the actions at one airport could have an impact at other airports, thus a spillover effect to their provided services. Also to ensure relative consistency in implemented security measures. Advisorguy- I completely agree, a guy with a M16 is a big deterrent to would be hijacker. I do like the fact that TSA is employing behavior detection officers at the general aviation checkpoints, if a would be hijacker is pulled in for secondary inspection, there is a high likelihood that their plan (and possible future plans) would be thwarted.

I can ask some of my contacts at TSA for info if you want. My feelings are that TSA is doing a good job with what they have. Most of theh people checking bags are NOT DHS federales but local security contractors due to cost savings measures inside the Gov't If it were up to me they would all be Feds or at least Nat Guardsmen...

My 76 y/o father is on the "no fly" list. Is actually someone who's name is similar to his who is apparently 40ish, but causes a hassle at EVERY check in. Not possible to get automated boarding passes for him or anyone else traveling with him.
Filing TSA's paperwork to remove himself from the list resulted in increased scrutiny at check in. The supervisors supervisor now has to sign off on it. Why dont you research whether anyone has ever sucessfully removed themselves from the "no fly" list.

DHS is amending the CAPPS system (the computer system that maintains the 'no-fly' list) for 2009 to include a DOB for all who are in the system to alleviate that occourance. Now if you have the same name and DOB, then your still gonna get hassled. . .

Security isn't that great, when I went to pick up my car, I accidentally left a can of soda in my carry on, and GOT THROUGH SECURITY, didn't realize until I was transferring planes in Denver. This was at Hartsfield Atlanta, the worlds busiest airport too. Maybe getting the person running the x-ray machine to actually look at the screen instead of chatting with the guy running the metal detector would be a good start...

That just makes too much sense to merit implementation.
