Windows Vista question(s)
You all know my laptop issue, ya know my new paper weight and or wheel chock cannot surf the web.
I found out that my software for my classes will not work with mac, which is lame. So, I have to get something winders powered and I might as well go Vista The Dells I am looking at either have Premium or Ultimate, two words that mean a lot, I guess. Which one should I go for? I've been an xp user for years and would like to move on. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WP9tkpMRD9s&feature=related |

Home Premium does have System Restore. It does not have the "complete PC backup/restore" function (similar to Norton Ghost) that comes with Business/Ultimate. The difference is that complete PC backup/restore makes an image of your entire drive and can bring you back from a complete system failure. System restore can only fix some OS related problems (not a hard drive failure, etc).
All versions of Vista can act as Remote Desktop *clients* (i.e. connecting to other PCs via Remote Desktop). However, you can not connect *to* a Home Premium machine with remote desktop. You need Business or Ultimate to be able to allow incoming Remote Desktop connections. Hope that helps more than confuses

Vista Business does not have codecs to play movies on DVD. You need Home Premium or Ultimate to do that.

well vista in some ways is better than xp. You need alot of memory thought 2 gigs at the minimum. Vista has a very smart caching system that will store the programs you use the most into its cache. Unlike xp vista will use most of the ram installed and its used to store the programs in its cache. This means the programs that you use alot will open extremely quick. compared to a xp or Mac g5 which i also use photoshop will open completely in 2 to 3 seconds rather than the 15 to 20. It has a philosophy of, why have all the memory just sit there and do nothing. i think they have improved with vista but there is still room for improvement in other areas. I run Home Premium and have no problems at all with it.

I'm going to hunt for a referb XPS M1530 with windows Vista Ultimate(why not, its the highest level), 3 gigs of ram and 160 gig hard drive.
I now have a 15" LCD screen from my old laptop that is just sitting here, useless.. I wonder how I can turn it into a neat picture display thing or a dual screen for my soon to be new laptop |

It's working great!
I've had Vista Business on my laptop for a long time. (as you know) I just built a new desktop and have Vista Ultimate 64-bit with 8GB of RAM. It works great for running memory hogs like PhotoShop CS3 and Capture NX simultaneously because each application can have it's own 2GB of RAM. Adobe CS4 for Windows will be available in 64-bit so I'm ready.
