Naked sunbather impales himself on metal spike
A naked sunbather had to be rescued by firefighters after he impaled himself through the groin with a metal spike.

Last Updated: 1:48PM BST 31 Jul 2008

Gavin Rigby, 34, was left stranded on top of the eight inch spike for half an hour after the bizarre accident.

Three firecrews including one armed with special cutting equipment arrived at the scene along with police and an ambulance.

Mr Rigby had been sunbathing with friends by Haslar Lake, in Gosport, Hants, when he got up to stretch his legs.

He walked away from the group but lost his footing and toppled head first down the short slope.

He landed on the eight inch metal spike, which was protruding from the ground.

After he was freed, Mr Rigby, from Gosport, was rushed to Queen Alexandra Hospital, in nearby Cosham, but was later discharged.

"We often go and sunbathe naked at this spot because it's quite discreet," he said.

"I wandered off briefly and the next thing I knew I was falling and I landed upside down on top of this rusty spike.

"It went about three inches into my groin but I couldn't free myself. I was just lying there upside down on this spike for about half an hour.

"It was certainly painful."

I remember reading one of those Darwin Awards stories. Apparently some golfer (probably drunk) stuck his... well... his balls in the.. well.. the ball washer. I can't remember what the extent of his injuries were but it was nasty.

A little tune by Heywood Banks, appropriate to the occasion!

I don't play golf, but I've seen ball washers at the links...unless the guy was 8' 2"" how did he manage to do such a stunt w/o assistance?

IIRC he straddled it or something, i know weird, but I remember reading it on the internet so I know it's true.
