Failing the place for a flywheel, and that it has no counterweights,in addition to it being externally driven I'm going to opt for a reciprocating pump of some kind,if not a large reduction geared steam paddle engine

Giant reduction gears directly attached to humungous crank shaft with very little angular difference between bearing surfaces. Broken. Which means what? Too much power was applied for too heavy a load? Overspeed trip failed?

Also, I don't get the reduction gears -- how do they mesh with the gear on the crank shaft? Looks like 1:1 for the big gears and 1:4 (maybe) for the little gear? I dunno. Low RPM humungous torque. That thing must have a long stroke?

Looks like a short stroked engine to me.
I don't see any definitive means of determining it's size in the pictures.

Yeah, I started thinking maybe it was a scale model of a shop -- the poor focusing implies difficulty in taking a close-up of something small in low light.

I'm not a model guy, but do people go to the trouble of making tracked hoists and lathes and workbenches to scale? Wow!

The tripled gear piece is being held up or balanced by two saw horses. If the gears are as large as they appear, it doesn't seem as though sawhorses could carry that weight.

The horse look like 2x4 and it looks like a 4x4 is pushed up against the gear on the horse. That kind of gives a scale for size.
