chevy aveo question

my step dad just pulled in to the driveway in his 04 chevy aveo and the exhaust manifold was glowing red! It melted part of the skid plate and that looks to be the only damage.

I had autozone run the codes the other day and it showed up as a faulty pre cat O2 sensor. I am certain that had to be an issue if the exhaust was glowing red hot it had to be running super rich.

He couldn't get it over 20 mph( limp mode) and I bet he has either nuked the cat as well as the post cat sensor....

help? I don't know these Daewoo engines

Go get the car tested for smog to see if the cat is no good. What you described is most likely the reason for the glowing manifold but go get it tested.

Usually emission control components are under a longer warranty term than the rest of the car. Check out the emission warranty info in the owner's manual packet.

On a gasser, too lean runs hot and melts stuff. Also, timing retarded too far will cause the manifolds to glow...

Pre cat O2 sensors will have an effect on the fuel mixture. HOWEVER, I don't see it having the only effect. I believe the car will still function but if it is an issue, it will only allow the fuel to go within the window. IOW, just because it reads really lean, it might not make it fuel efficient but it will not make the injectors go wide open since that would be outside of the parameters of the program.

I think that the cat is clogged and is causing the manifold to get hot and wiped out the sensor in the process. I'd be real surprised if the cat is in good shape.

what would cause the cat to get clogged? the car is driven every single day.

Its still under warranty so I'm not going to go out there and remove the cat to check.

Plus the dealership gets paid to do this type of work. You gain nothing by using your time to try and figure it out.

I'd have them do the T belt, its probably only $300 or so.

Demand a loaner to. I don't know how Chevy's dealers are with loaners though.

My friend was able to get an E350 loaner last time his car was in though, maybe you can get that new Malibu.
