Computer Nazi's At Work....

Anyone who wants to rant and rave about who puts what on your computer at work have at it here.....

I asked repeatidly(sp), on more that one occassion to more than one IS person "Do Not Put That Software On My Computers," they are graphics computers not office computers and I am the only one who accesses them. I come in today and what do I have on my computer? The freakin software I asked them not to put on....WTF. I called this morning and asked them to get this crap off my computer asap...we shall see how long it takes.

Oh, Oh I have one! I HATE whatever program they have on here that forces a re-boot in the middle of the night.

Sometimes I have several documents/emails that are half finished and I end up losing all my work every time they do this... The only way I've been able to stop this is to unplug the network cable every night.

My job is such that I may spend a great deal of time on the computer but I am frequently called (daily) on emergencies and I have to jump up and leave the office for hours or sometimes days at a time. During that time, I may work from other computers or I might stop back in the office to try and catch up on works in progress.

I try to log off and power down on the weekends but it doesn't always work out that way.

Use the AutoSave feature if your job requires you to leave your computer unattended on occasion. Kind of a PITA while you are working but it is a godsend for the kinds of situations you seem to be confronted with.

Laptop thefts and security are paramount in most IS shops, and administrators are pressured from the top brass to install all sorts of software designed to alleviate these issues. The downloads are mandatory...nothing you can do about it.

I try to keep most unneeded software off my laptop except corporate-compliant applications, so when loads do occur, I don't have to worry about much contention with third party software...keep iTunes, Yahoo Messenger (a real hog btw), and other stupid stuff off the machine!

I have my own personal machines for that sort of thing. The laptop belongs to them, so why gripe about what they want to put on it?

Haha, I had to laugh as I too am one of those Nazis. Always save your work and/or log off if you have to leave for any extended period.

If we have to push a critical security patch overnight, we give it priority over users who did not save or log off (our policy requires this).

Another scenario - if the power flickers momentarily you will lose your work just the same. And it won't be our fault. Save early and Save often!
