Understatement is the whole point!

Didn't you see the Top Gear clip about bling? You won't have the change to put 9 pounds worth of petrol in that Roller!

I've seen a Phantom pushing down on PCH a while ago. It was cruising just ahead of me. The frame of the license plate just spared the 6 digits/letters. The rest, such as registration stickers, state etc. was fully covered up by the frame. The color combo of the plate looked like a newer New Mexico plate. But who knows.

I suppose, only in a Phantom, you can drive around in such a fashion, without being stopped and fined ....

How many cars does Jay Leno own? I know he makes a lot of money, but I can't believe the vast collection of cars that guy has.

Not sure, but at least he has good tastes.

Cool car!

They make Mercedes feel cheesy, but the engineering certianly isn't on the level of the Germans. Fit and finish and attention to detail is higher though.

I have always prefered a British interior to the Germans. The British know how to do leather and wood.
One of my all time favorite cars. I love the understatedness and the sheer power.

Interesting tidbit about that Turbo-R being one of only two cars Jay ever bought new. The other was an '83 300(S)D that he said was just too slow so he traded it in on the Bentley. Just a little performance gap there.

Yeah he mentioned that in the video but you can tell that he still loved it. I wonder if his opinion would have been different if he had gotten a 300SD instead?

Did he mention if it was a D or SD? I didn't catch it with all of the background noise here.

When I was in high school in Augusta, GA, one of my friends fathers (not him, his brother or his sister, but his dad) had one of those. He also had a 560 SEL. It was like a Ferris Bueller moment when I first saw it: we were at his house, grilling out by the pool, and he needed something out of one of the garages. When the doors came up, both cars were sitting side by side with California plates. I was like, wtf? His father owned collection agencies (20 in LA alone) all over CA. He was actually in CA at the time, but alas the owner was a step-father and my pal's mom was on thin ice, so I never got to drive it.

I think that Turbo-R is beautiful. All wood and leather on the interior, one of a very few cars that was designed well enough not to be tempted to mod it. The wheel scream 80's, it's so funny! I would take one in a heartbeat!

BTW, did anybody notice the w123 at 3:08 left in the video?

That was a nasty-looking car. Take a '75 Caprice, pry off the fender skirts and slap a Rolls grille on it and you have a Camargue clone.
