Don't like the mini 14...

Fired one today, actualy I was kinda thinking about buying it from my uncle since he never uses it. It's 15 years old and I'd be shocked if more than 50 or 100 rounds have been through it. Looks like a new gun on the outside. Anyway the trigger sucks. Its dead at first than bam it fires. At first I wasn't pulling it all the way and was like WTF, but you just have to yank it. Mind you I oiled and cleaned the trigger assembly yesterday. That dead spot drove me nuts.

Next comes the weight, its heavy. Its like they stuck a tiny littler barrel on an M14 and called it good. Its to heavy for what it is, and the barrel is so light that it gets hot, very hot, very fast. When it gets hot good luck hitting much out past 100 yards. The group got lose, not like on the M1 Carbine, which remained consistant. Even after 60+ years and combat.

The stocks cheap, and iron sights suck. This one had a decent Bushnell scope on it which helped matters.

What I really disliked was the kick. Now the only other 5.56 rifle I'm used to is my friends M4. Comparing a mini 14 to the M4 is like comparing a Ferrari to a Chevy. Not even near the same league. I think it kicks so much because the freaken slide is to big and heavy, lots of mass moving.

Now I had my grandfathers .30cal M1 Carbine as well. Now that is how you shrink the Garand design. Very similer internals, exept on the M1 they got it right. Fantastic little rifle, very little recoil, accurite, easy to shoot. The shrank the action so its lighter, as the should for a smaller round. Even after a lot of use the trigger pull is quite nice. Not as good as the M4, but good enough.

So insted of the mini 14 I'm going to get a K98. I don't feel like dropping $1,800 on a full sized M14 or M4.

Just my 2 cents, I'm sure there are people who love it plus upgrades.

My .02:

Mini-14s are pretty cool....

Sitting in the back seat of a Piper Cub while the guy in the front seat leans out and shoots the back of the propeller with one, is not.

Now why in the world would you want to shoot at the plane you are flying in?

What's the intended use of the rifle you finally get? There's a world of difference between a Mini14 and a K98. Actually more than a world. Pretty much a complete civilization and time warp.

If he’s talking a Mauser K98. You sure got that right.

I was wondering about that. I'd never heard of a K98 until this thread. That thing looks nothing of the Mini-14 sort.

I'm to cheap to drop 2 G's on a good M14, and I figure if the Mauser was good enough for the Germans to defeat most of the armies in Europe, and take over North Africa its good enough for me. Plus its German so its really, really nice. The Germans are very good at making guns.

My friend got an A on his term paper...which was about 20th century warefare. I told him I would write it for him off the top of my head in about an hour if he paid me with a couple of Ketal 1 handles. He wrote it himself, damn.

I have Guderian and Rommal quotes I wanted to use! I was going to paint a fascinating possible connection between Guderian, Hans Von Luck and several others to the 1944 bomb plot.

Fun, and enjoyment of owning a part of history. I don't want to have to gut what I kill so I doubt I'll hunt with it.

Honestly the history behind a gun is far more interesting to me than the actualy weapon itself. Last time I was at the Cabela's super store I was walking through the weapons section with my buddy, who had a 20th century history class he needed help on. So I started with a 1903 Springfield and gave him a 20th century history on war. I picked up a K98...now this isthe gun tha the Germans used to...a Lee Enfield...this is a special weapon the British...M1 Garand, etc.

What you guys think about old Mosin Nagant rifles?

A friend has 2 and is modifying one very extensively. It looks good, and it fairly cheap to do stuff to.

I have five. They are neat as a piece of history. I don't modify them for that reason. I'm more interested in the history of the weapons than messing around with them in a gunshop. Some of these are real pieces of history.

I saw a model 1898 MN manufactured under the Tsar which still had it's Imperial crest on it. That meant it hadn't been taken over by the Commies yet. It was saved from such ignominy by being captured by the Germans during WWI. There was a German capture stamp on it. There was also an Austrian stamp on it so the Germans must have given it to the Austrians during the war and thereafter the Austrians gave it to the Finns as it also had a Finnish stamp on it. The Finns used MN's exclusively and they used them very well in fact against the Russians during the 30's and 40's. So that was a rifle that had been thru WWI and II in the hands of four major combatants and still didn't seem to be in too bad a shape. Would have been a great piece of history to have. Unfortunately I just didn't have the money

As shooters. They can be pretty decently accurate rifles though I prefer the K98 to them in that score as well. As regards mucking around with them. If you can find a really common version that's a really beaten up old thing then I guess there's no historical loss modifying them.
