OMG, there it is! That's sooo cute ....!

I admit, I didn't see it there, but what I meant was the actual fog, that I can't see ...

Move to northwestern North Carolina and you will really get use of it. The fog going down I-77 off of the mountains onto the plateau is wretched many times of the year. Some of the worst fog I have ever encountered was on I-77 in extreme southern VA / extreme northern NC.

From the "Rules of the Road" (Ireland)

Use fog lights only during dense fog and falling snow. You must turn them off at all other times.

Now thats not to say that people obey that law...a lot of people drive with them on in all weathers because...they think they look cool/they have no idea they're switched on/they're just plain stupid...
It has recently been made a penalty point offence to have your fog lights on when required, which at least recognises the stupidity of driving with your fogs on, though how well it will be enforced is another matter.
It is quite strictly enforced in the UK i believe.

@ compu_85 - fog lights are actually 20 times brighter than brake lights, annoying none the less

At 20 times brighter than brakelamps, which I have no trouble believing judging from mine, I am leary about using the rears to warn off tailgaters. You never know who you're dealing with or how well they are armed.

Coming home from work last night, I picked up a tailgater in a big gaudy van with foglamps blazing. Fortunately, or unfortunately actually, he spent most of his time so close to me the foglamps were below my field of vision. When I had a chance to move over and let him by, he ran right up to the next car and started up with the same.

We can have all the laws we want but around here it doesn't mean a thing because it isn't enforced. Based on my driving in England & Ireland I'd say people there do a much better job of following the traffic laws. At least they are aware of them...

They use it in fog only. In fact you might get a ticket if you use them when it's not foggy.

I notice this a lot here. Many drive with their fog lights on even in clear dusk, just because it looks "cool".

Ps. heavy rainfall or snow storms or a likewise reduced visiblity will be a legitimate situation to use the fog lights.

What kind of fog requires only front fog lights and what kind of fog requires front and rear fog lights?

That's a good question. I have used those fogs lights so few times in my life, but I would say: Once it's foggy you may use both, front and rear.

I just recoup, there are 2 stages when pulling the light switch. First setting is for fronts, second setting for rear. W123, W126, W124 and older models.

Add the 210 to that list, mine has the same setup and the rear fog is very bright.

If you're in foggy city traffic and at a stop light it might be better to switch the rear fog off since it's really bright and would definitely annoy the other drivers behind you.

So once you get moving again, and you know the others behind you are farther away, turn the rear fogs on.

That's what I think, and it was a good question.

None that I know of... my VW has is the same rotatory / pull switch setup as the 'benz where the first pull is front only and the 2nd is front and rear. My 91's fog switch was not part of the light switch, but had two detentes. The first was front fogs and the 2nd was front and rear.

Just remember it's as bright as a brake light. If you would be annoyed by someone in front of you having it turned on, shut yours off
