Because you don't want to stroke out and die if you are lucky? And if you are unlucky, you get to spend the rest of your life disabled.

				Not talking about your son

but will tell you what helped at my house:

We fought the bedtime battles and get up and get ready in the AM battles and one day I'd had too much. New Rule: Stay up as long as you want and do whatever you want but you all have alarm clocks and you are now responsible for all your own morning routine. At (insert time here) I will be in the car to take you to school and at (previous time + 5 min) I will be gone (or back in the house or whatever). If you forget something it won't affect anybody but you so I don't care, I already have my diploma. I realize everybody's logistics are different and all kids are different too but once they get the idea that their behavior is only impacting them negatively it loses its novelty. BTW, started this 3 years ago when they were 10, 12, 14; 16.

You all mention boys at that age...well, despite the alleged maturity level of girls, any of those scenarios would fit my daughter!

I think during adolescence, a section of brain goes dormant...I'm certain of it! But in order to reduce the stress in my already-tense life, I've learned to ignore some of those lapses in her behavior and let her suffer the consequences. Today, I drop her off at school, drive off, and shortly thereafter, catch a glimpse of her house keys and cellphone resting on the seat beside me...
