Get the Cannon MX700. Awesome ink jet. Dirt cheap ink. Scan, copy, fax, print, SD card interface, and regularly on sale for 99 bucks.

If you want a quality unit, get a color laser all in one. You'll pay more up front, but will save a fortune with toner vs ink. My wife was killing me printing stuff for work and everything she felt was important on the net. Runs me around $25 a year for toner as I fill it myself.

Agreed, a color laser is the way to go. I print for a living. and those cheap inkjets are deceiving, when you buy one for $89 the ink levels are about 1/4 full so you will have to buy more ink. The truth is that about 100 gallons of inkjet ink cost them about $3 to make.

And even if you buy the "cheap" inkjet cartridges, it will still run you big bucks over the long run. Not to mention the "bargain" inkjet printers have a life span of about a year.

I am off for the weekend ant i use it at my office. But, it is huge, so the picture is not decieving. If you want an ink jet, i would still get a cannon one. Cannon ink jet priners have per page printing costs comparable to laser printers. instead of a combined cartridge with tiny ink spaces for each color and a new print head attached, cannon has a large seperate ink tank for each color. If you run out of blue, you can replace just the blue for about $5 or even fill it yourself. Cannons come with full ink cartridges, not the "starters"

Cannon does make smaller units, but I am pretty attached to the MX 700. It has a document feeder that allows you to scan up to 15 pages into a PDF file. The software that it comes with is excellent an easy to use.

I would just like to add that Epson features separate ink tanks and have the best quality due to their proprietary design of piezo head. This ink cartridges don't have the head like in Canon and HP. This keeps the costs down as well. The only caveat is that Epson needs to be used regularly to keep the nozzles clean, if they are not used for months then they clog and replacement nozzles are 60% of the cost of printer. For the first time I have gone to a Canon from a Epson as the last one got hit by a surge. Even though the quality of the Canon IP6210D is pretty good, its not close to the Epson and the ink cartridges are quite costly compared to Epson.

Also bear in mind, according to a recent article published, the ink level indicators are quite deceptive, study shows that there is still 30% of ink still left so the general advice is to ignore them till you get faded prints, I do and it works out well, don't have to go out and prematurely spend money on new set of cartridges.

As for color laser, only the high ends are a good idea but they cost money. Lower end lasers usually can't match the photo quality of the inkjet photo printers.

A little off topic...

I have a Lexmark printer and started getting faded prints.
I went and bought a re-inking kit and put ink in the cartridge and it didn't work.
I went back and the guy told me some companies put chips in the cartridges that stop them from working when they go empty.
Is this true?
If it is how do you get around it?

I bought a new cartridge and it worked fine.

Danny
