Spent the afternoon on the beach in So Cal today. Bikini's bouncing about and sailboats floating by...the Riviera of the West Coast.

Well let me give you the weather in good ole upstate NY. Right now its 30 and the wind is blowing like crazy. Tomorrow is a high of 9 and the nights for the next two nights are lows of -12. I just put the dry gas in all 5 of the cars. I have been running the water in my house and told my tenants the same. I dont need any forzen pipes at 3 in the morning like last year.

Crazy storm last night! Started out about -2C and blowing snow, high winds. Then the temperature starts to drop, winds really pick up - and - thunder and lightning. I have never seen lightning nor heard thunder during a snowstorm in January. Then our power got knocked out, presumably by the storm. A whole chunk of the grid went down, lots of people affected. Temperature plunged to a balmy -30C. Power was restored last night, thankfully, in time for the deep freeze.

No official report yet but provincial spokesman have issued a statement that the incident and bizarre weather are more or less Bush's fault.

THUNDERSNOW! I haven't been in one for about a year now...seems like they're pretty "common" around rivers and such...almost two or three times a winter, at least for the past 10 years or so, we get thundersnows around here...yep, they'll take out a power grid...usually due to the snow (as wet as it is...) building up on the outside of the insulators at the power stations then *POW* - you're doing your best Stevie Wonder imitation...if I were you (and this evening, I might be) I'd get a stand-by power generator and have some way of getting it hooked into the home's service panel to, at least, fire up the furnace and a couple of needed survival items...then make sure you have enough fuel for the generator to get you through 24 hours before a refill is needed...Cold Kills!!!

Thundersnow! lol, that is perfect. Exactly what it was. Never seen one before. I am contemplating a generator. The nice thing is that our new home here has a great wood-burning stove in the basement, as well as a large wood fireplace in the upstairs den, with heat returns. I had both going last night and the house stayed quite warm, even with temps as low as -10C. The wood stove in particular generated a ton of heat. It was comforting to know that I could at least keep the house moderately warm ( the bottom floors anyway) without power. A generator would provide that extra cushion though, will probably invest in one.

Not that living on a boat is bad, neccessarily . . . . Could be rough during hurricane season, though.

There's so much snow hereabouts the Mexican day laborers are forming a cartel.

Carleton, does it stay a little warmer out there on LI because of the ocean? I know most coastal reas tend to be more moderate than areas further inland. At least that's true of NC where I grew up. Down there the Gulf Stream helps to keep the air warmer.
