Glen Campbell

Anyone else pleasantly surprised by his new album? It's covers, but tastefully done covers... it does NOT sound like some hipster made it his job to "rediscover" Glen and parade him out doing someone else's versions of these songs. I'm liking this album, but I may be biased. I hard "Wichita Lineman" thousands of times growing up; my dad loved that song.

My favorite GC tune was Gentle on my Mind.
Sweet ballad.

..which is a John Hartford song. Now there was another great musician (and riverboat pilot).

Smothers Brothers had a great cast of musicians in those days: John Hartford, Steve Martin, Glen Campbell...

I listened to an interview with him a few months ago on NPR(?). They talked about all his studio playing. He said it was a great life being a studio musician.

He talked pretty straight about his difficulties with substance abuse.

They played some of the new songs and he still sounded pretty good.

he was "the" studio musician in the sixties, and beyond. got into cocaine and then freebase. i believe he had been cleaned up for a long time up until he fell off the wagon a few years ago - briefly, thankfully.

i worked at his old house up at the top of hollywood hills for a tv show a few years back. was quite a beautiful place when he built it in the 60's. great location with amazing views (about 240 degrees).

didn't know he had a new album out. thanks for the heads up.

Glen Campbell is a talented musician. He had a great TV show (at least in my memory it was great) in the late 60s. No lip syncing. He had actual musicians playing actual music. John Hartford was a regular guest.

I didn't know he still recorded. Thought he was relegated to the Holiday Inn Lounge circuit. Wasn't he in legal (drunk) problems in AZ a few years back.Looked to be down on his luck a the time iirc. Good to see back making albums.

He played in concert with our symphony orchestra a couple years back, it was a great show. His guitar talents took a back seat to the singing, but all those years as a studio musician still come through when he plays live.

I read that Glen Campbell was a popular studio musician back in the day, and played guitar on most of The Beach Boy's albums.
