Homemade CD Cleaner Fluid
Does anyone make their own?
I have one of those little spinny things with a little spray bottle of fluid, which is almost empty. The fluid smells like alcohol, with, I'm guessing, distilled water. Does anyone make their own, and what is the mixture and proportions? Please feel free to turn this into a political discussion. |

That's isopropyl alcohol you're smelling. If you can find some of the pure (anhydrous) stuff, just add it in small quantities. Don't use rubbing alcohol - it's only 70% isopropyl, the rest is water and mineral oil.

Mineral oil in the 70% alcohol? That's the first I've heard of it. Does this depend on the brand? Otherwise there is no need to use anhydrous stuff, if you're just going to add water anyway.

If you do so, wipe across in a linear pattern along the diameter of the disc, not circular!!!
You can (and will) leave fine circular scratches that will impede the laser read path, creating more havoc than you began with.

My first question would be: Why would one have to clean their CD's"? I've never cleaned a CD or DVD. Mine are always either in the machine or in their holder.
I will say I've used toothpaste to restore a DVD that I loaned to a friend who's kids got hold of it and scratched the crap out of it. I started with standard TP then used the tarter control because it's a little more abrasive.

OK. I have a CD from the library here and is skipping like a SOB. I will try the toothpaste and report back...

I use a microfiber wax applicator, apply a little TP and water then swipe side to side across the scratch. It's like polishing a scratch out of the finish on your car. Just don't wipe in circular patterns like G said.

May be overkill, but who knows what they have on them, and I'd rather not have it in my machines. |
