You make it sound like president bush had nothing to do with anyting that happened on his watch.

That is simply not true.

Congress plays a role in our government just like the other two branches. (executive, judicial)

Its called a balance of power.

In fact, good old Gerorie boy and Mr Dick have expanded and, well overstepped the boundries of their respective offices. Dick even claimed to not be in any branch but in a seperate class all of his own.

I think it is funny that they did soo much to grab for power in the executive branch and now its been turned over to Obama and crew..

I don't think the article says we need to change the form of government, just the people doing the governing...

Can't argue with any of that. I think my objection is more about the tone of the article, as if our government is run by a bunch of losers. They do some maddening things, but they also face incredible challenges. I think they do a better job than people say.

For example, the article says:

I am not defending the status quo. For whatever reason, our government seems to have more room for improvement these days than it did just a few short decades ago. Maybe it's something about the internet or 24/7 news coverage. We seem to be having trouble adjusting to the new environment. As a result we get people like Eric Cantor in places of great power.

I think that in the old days the media would not publish a lot of the stuff they dug up. FDR did a lot of things that were hinky and never got called on it. In fact his not being able to walk was never reported on during his lifetime.
JFK, Truman, LBJ had issues too. It was not until Nixon that the press started really digging. Now they report on everything. This makes the politicians look bad -- not that they aren't bad, but now we KNOW it...

In real life, the problem is pandering. The representative needs to align his vote with the party line otherwise the party will leave him out in the cold come the next election.

It's always about getting reelected in the short term............rather than about the "right" thing to do for the long term.

It's a sad commentary that they all vote as a bloc..........a select few control the vote. If they can't think for themselves, WTF do we need 'em for? Just let Nancy Pelosi vote the entire democratic bloc.........

I have a terrier with a rat fixation. Doesn't matter whether there's a rat, he's always on the look out jus' in case.

I am in complete accord with you on the degrading spiral of government, that in my own memory started with Kennedy's foolish "Bay of Pigs" crap. One would think that would have been sufficient grounds for Congress to throttle the presidency but instead, they unleashed Johnson with the War Powers Act, which he abused like middle-aged priest. You would think that Congress would throttle the presidency after Johnson, but they didn't, which gave us Tricky Dick and his elusive ways. You would think they would throttle ...

Same with Reagan, Bush I, & Clinton. Now we have the crowning pinnacle of Congressional ineptitude -- the past 8 years.

Anybody heard a peep out of Congress concerning the War Powers Act? I mean since Bush left office.

And that's just foreign policy.

We can talk about the interminable, inept, enormously expensive, and expanding "War on Poverty". Now there's a war with the only casualty being taxpayers. The same dumb forking pigs who will pay for this "bail-out" of the economy, a euphemism for "bail-out of my special interest group."

I'd like to rewind the fed to about 1934 size.
