I was just reading about recent activity at Kileua in Hawaii and saw this: Sulfur dioxide emission rates remain elevated and variable. The most recent average measurement was 1,100 tonnes/day on January 30, still elevated above the 2003-2007 average rate of 140 tonnes/day.

Somebody call the freaking EPA!

Redoubt popped 5 times Sunday night/Monday morning. Ash estimated to 50-60,000 ft.

Typical. I've been watching the thing on AVO's website for weeks and it goes off in the middle of the night. Nature just doesn't seem to give a damm now does it

The cool thing about this Mount Redoubt eruption is that is provides a nice opportunity to take a shot at Bobby Jindal: http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/03/jindals_mockery_of_volcano_monitoring_money_only_lo.php?ref=fp1

The power of a volcano is incomprehensible. I saw Mount Saint Helens about 25 years after it erupted. It blasted out to one side and knocked down trees as far as the eye could see in that direction. You have to see it to believe it.

I hope Mount Redoubt doesn't hurt anybody.

Sounds like something Paris Hilton might have said.

Actually, if they spew enough ash into the atmosphere, they cause global cooling.

There was a real big eruption a while back, in the Philippines, that actually lowered the global average temp for the year by almost 1 degree!

Except Paris would have figured out some way to get paid for saying it. A few years ago, when Paris was a really big celebrity, I understand that people would pay her to show up at events to say, "That's hot", into a microphone. I heard that one such event even had an interpreter who said, "That's hot", in Spanish.

I like Paris. She is good at what she does. It's not her fault that our culture rewards such pointless behavior.

Tell 'ManBearPig' to make it stop?

Require the volcano to buy 'carbon credits'?

Install catalytic converters on all volcanic vents?

Oh I know... implement a carbon tax on all volcanoes to be paid by the electric utilities... no wait, THAT is Obama's idea, not Al Gore's.
No wait again, It IS Al Gore's idea just like he invented the Internet

I can't see Russia from Alaska because of all the dust and smoke in the air.
