Yes but will they do that knowing that China has a bunch of our debt? If I owed you a million bucks and you are my neighbor, I'd treat you a lot different than if we were plain old neighbors. My question is what the Chinese will do in retaliation? I don't believe they will just take it lying down, do you?

Feb 12 (Reuters) - China will continue to buy U.S. Treasury bonds even though it knows the dollar will depreciate, because such investments remain its "only option" in a perilous world, the Financial Times cited a senior Chinese banking regulator as saying.

China would continue to buy Treasuries in spite of its misgivings about U.S. finances, Luo Ping, a director-general at the China Banking Regulatory Commission, told the paper after a speech in New York on Wednesday.

"Except for U.S. Treasuries, what can you hold?" Luo was cited by the paper as saying. "Gold? You don't hold Japanese government bonds or UK bonds. U.S. Treasuries are the safe haven. For everyone, including China, it is the only option."

But if we start a protectionist thing with them, will they still buy it? If so, play ball.

who else will they sell to? they still need the US to export to maintain the growth they are occustomed to. They are as big a prisoner of our economy as we are of their debt purchase

Historically it's been the Repos who institute protectionism. In fact, they are the ones that essentially plunged the whole world into a ruinous trade war that precipitated the Great Depression, which the Democrats then managed to drag-out recovery for over a decade by institution of ruinous spending through expansion of the federal debt. Those two parties are amazing.

agreed but the Dems and Reps of today are very different than the past, heck Rep and Dem were completely switched in regards to minority vote in the 60's. I heard a lot of talk during the campaign about some revisions of the trade policies and the scrapping of NAFTA, it may not be first priority but its lurking in the shadows
